Be it known that we, GEORGE P. WETTLIN and J EREMIAH M. PETERSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Window- Screen, of which the following is a specication.
The object of the present invention is the provision of novel means which will admit of the ventilation of a room or apartment and exclude iiies, mosquitos, and like winged insects, said means being of simple construction, readily accessible for repairs, and adapted to be thrown into and out of action, as required.
For a full understanding of 'the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.
The improvement is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view of a window, showing the application of the invention, the upper sash being partly lowered and the lower sash partly raised. Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The window-easement may be of any desired construction and is provided with upper and lower sashes l and 2, which are slidable therein in the ordinary manner, holders 3 being provided, if desired, for securing the sashes in an adjusted position. If the sashes are counterbalanced, the holders 3 may be dispensed with. Thecasement or windowframe is constructed with a view to admit of the parts comprising the invention being easily reached when required Without necessitating the breaking of the plastering or the marring of the walls when it is necessary to expose the operating parts for any desired purpose. As shown, the easement or windowframe comprises a lintei 4, sill 5, side pieces 6, upper and lower facing-strips 7 and S, and side facing-strips 9, the facing-strips being duplicated at the front and rear of the casement, so as to form in effect a box-frame of ordinary construction. The facing- strips 7, 8, and 9 are secured to the frame proper by screws, so as to admit of their removal when access to the box portion of the frame is required for any purpose. The upper and lower facingstrips extend over thevside facingstrips, which is of advantage, so as to disclose the upper and lower rollers when occasion requires.
Upper and lower spring-actuated rollers l0 are journaled at their ends in the end portions of the side pieces 6 and are provided with wirenetting 1l,which constitutes the screen. Oircular openings l2 are formed in the end portions of a side piece 6 and are sufficiently large to admit of the rollers passing endwise therethrough. Bars 13 span the openings l2 and are secured at their en ds to the side piece at points beyond the openings and are provided centrally with an opening to receive the adjacent journal of the rollers. The bars 13 are made fast to the side piece by ordinary wood-screws to admit of their easy removal,
so that the rollers can be withdrawn by an endwise movement through the openings 12. Grooves 14 are formed vertically in the side pieces 6 and receive the edge portion of the wire-netting, thereby maintaining a close joint between the screen and the sides of the window-casing, so as to effectually exclude flies and the like.
The upper roller is located above the lintel, and the latter is slotted about midway of its edges for the passage of the wire-netting, which is attached in any desired manner to the top rail of the upper sash. As shown, the free end of the wire-netting is reinforced by a metallic strip, and the latter is secured in a kerf or groove formed in the upper edge of the top rail. It will thus be seen that when the upper sash is lowered the wire-netting will be unrolled from the upper roller and extend across the space formed between said sash and the upper portion of the casing, thereby admitting of ventilation to the exclusion of winged insects.
The lower spring-actuated roller is located below the sill, and the free end portion of the wire-netting wound thereon is secured to the bottom rail of the lower sash, so that upon elevating the lower sash the wire-netting will be uncoiled from the lower roll and form a screen between the bottom portion of the window-frame and the lower end of the bottom sash. The wire-netting may be secured in any convenient way to the bottom rail of the lower sash; but it is preferred to reinforce its free end portion by a metallic strip 15, which is folded so as to embrace opposite sides of the netting, the folded portion being secured by rivets or like fastenings. The lower portion of the bottom rail is rabbeted to receive the lnetallic strip 15, and the latter is provided near its ends with outwardly-extending projections 16, to be engaged bycorresponding projections 17 of combined sash lifts and fasteners 1S, applied to the bottom rail of the lower sash. The sash-lifts 18 have pivotal connection with the sash, so as to be turned to throw their projections 17 into or out of engagement with the projections 16, thereby securin g or releasing the metallic strips 15 and the wire-netting, as required. An angle-plate 19 is secured to each end portion of the metallic strip 15, and its horizontal portion engages with the lower edge of the bottom rail of the lower sash and is likewise adapted to engage with the top side of the sill and prevent the screen from passing through the slot of the sill when disengaged from the sash.
Each sash-lift is of L form in edge view, the vertical portion 20 carrying the inner projection 17 at its lower end and the horizontal portion 21 constituting a grip against which a finger of a hand obtains a purchase when raising or lowering the sash. A journal 22 projects from the inner side of the part 18 and passes through an opening formed in a base-plate 23, which is secured by screws or other means to the sash. This journal is integral with the part 18 and is threaded to screw into the lower rail of the sash and hold the sash-lift in place.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters-Patent is- 1. The combination with a window-casement provided with upper and lower sliding sashes and comprising upper, lower, and side facing-pieces having detachable connection with the corresponding parts of the body of the frame, of upper and lower spring-aetnated rollers located above the lintel and below the sill respectively and readily accessible by removing the facing-pieces, and wirenetting wound upon the spring-actuated rollers and passing through slots in the lintel and sill and having connection with the sashes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a window-casement having openings in the end portions of a side piece, and provided with sliding sashes, of upper and lower spring-actuated rollers adapted to be passed endwise through the openings in the said side piece, bars spanning said openings and secured to the side piece upon opposite sides of the openings and constituting bearings for one end of the rollers, and wire-netting wound upon the spring-actuated rollers and having connection with the sashes, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a easement, and

wire-netting wound upon the roller, a metal strip reinforcing the free end portion of the wire-nettin g and adapted to be placed against a side of the sash-rail and having an outwardly-extending projection, and a sash-lift applied to the same side of the sash-rail as the said reinforcing-strip and adapted to confine the latter between the rail of the sash and itself, and having an inner projection to engage with the outer projection of the aforesaid reinforcing-strip and secure the latter, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a window-casing and a sliding sash, of a flexible screen, a metal reinforcing-strip applied to the outer end of the screen and adapted to be placed against a side of the rail of the sash and formed with an outwardly-extending projection, a second projection extendinginwardly from the reinforcing-strip and engaging with the edge of the sash-rail and serving jointly with the reinforcing-strip to properly position the latter, and a sash-lift movably connected with the side of the sash-rail against which the reinforcing-strip is placed and having an inner projection to engage with the outer projection of said reinforcing-strip and secure the latter, substantially in the manner set forth.
5. The combination with a window-casement, a sliding sash, and a spring-actuated roller located below the sill and provided with a ilexible screen passing through an opening of the sill, of a metallic strip reinforcing the outer end portion of the screen and provided with an outer projection and adapted to be placed against the inner side of the bottom rail of the sash, a plate projecting inwardly IOO IIO
