ALBERT F. DEMOREST, OF MUSGATINE, IOWA.
.WINDOW AND DOOR SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,467, dated September 21, 1880. Application filed July 12, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT FREDERICK DEMOREST, of Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window and Door Screens, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of theimprovement. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken through the line x m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is-sectional plan view taken through the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish window or door screens so constructed that they can be readily adjusted into and secured in place, and which shall be simple in construction and neat in appearance.
A represents a rectangular frame, to which wire-gauze B is secured by tacks or in any 0 are bars placed at the sides and top of the frame A, and which have plates or flanges D attached to them to overlap the outer sides of the side and top bars of the frame A, so that no opening will be formed between the bars 0 and the frame A when the said bars 0 are moved outward. In the forward sides of the bars 0 are formed notches, in which are secured the outer ends of short bars E, which enter and slide in dovetailed grooves or notches in the forward sides of the side and top bars of the frame A. The inner parts of the bars E are slotted longitudinally to receive the screws F, by means of which the bars 0 are secured in place when adjusted.
G are sheet-metal caps placed upon the corners of thescreens to cover the openings that would be formed at the said corners when the bars 0 are moved outward. The caps G are secured in place by having their inner edges turned inward, or by slots and screws, so that they will slide sidewise and upward when the bars 0 are moved outward.
To the frame A, at the inner side of the wire-gauze I and upon the opposite sides of the center of the screen, are attached bars H, the inner sides of which are grooved longitudinally to receive tongues formed upon the outer sides of the side bars of the small frame I, so that the said frame I can be slid up and down.
To the outer side of the frame I is attached wire-gauze B. The wire-gauze between the lower parts of the bars H is cut away to form an opening, so that when the small screen I B is raised the hand can be passed out through the said opening to open or close blinds and shutters without removing the screen.
In applying the screen to windows the screen is placed beneath the lower rail of the upper or rear sash and the bars 0 are slid outward to enter the sash grooves-and fit against the lower rail of the upper sash, and are secured in place by tightening the screws F. With this construction the screen can be left in the window during the entire season, and will allow the blinds or shutters to be opened and closed readily, and will not interfere with the lowering and raising of the lower windowsash.
Ifdesired, the small frame I can be made of a width equal to the inner width of the frame A, the grooved bars H becoming the side bars of the frame A. This construction allows the aperture through the wire-gau he B to be made wider and gives greater facility for opening and closing blinds or shutters.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 8o ters Patent, is j 1. A window or door screen constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the frame A, wiregauze B, sliding bars 0, having flanges D, slotted dove- 8 5 tailed bars E, screws F, corner-caps G, grooved bars H, and frame I, having tongues upon its side bars, as set forth.
2. In a window or door screen, the combi nation, with the frame A, of the sliding bars (1, having flanges D, the slotted dovetailed bars E, the fastening-screws F, and the cornercaps G, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the screen can be adjusted in place, as set forth.
ALBERT FREDERICK DEMOREST.
