WILLIAM I. WOOSTEB, OF HARVARD, ILLINOIS.
BLIND-FASTENER AND SLAT-OPERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 230,096, dated July 13, 1880.
Application led February 14, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM I. vWoos'rEIt, of Harvard, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in House-Blinds, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device, showing blind and blind-slats closed. Fig. 2 is a sectional side-elevation of the same on line m rv, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation, partly in section, showingthe blind and blind-slats open.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide im.- proved devices for adjusting and locking the slats of blinds.
The invention consists of a slotted strip of wood or metal fixed vertically on aside of the blind and connected with each blind-Slat, said strip of wood or metal being moved vertically to open or close the slats and to bolt the blind by means of a rod that passes through the window-frame; and it consists, further, ofthe wire device for operating the slats.
In the drawings, A represents 'a Windowframe, B the blind, and O O the blind-slats.
The horizontal blind-slats O O are pivoted in the usual manner in the sides of the blind B; but instead of having a vertical strip stapled to the center of each slat, as is commonly done for the purpose of adjusting said slats, I provide a strip, K, of metal or Wood, having vertical slots h h, which strip K is movably secured to a side of the blind B by studs or screws m, that pass through the slots h hand into the blind B. The slats C C are connected to this movable strip K by the bent Wires a a, one end of each of said wires a engaging in a loop or staple, o, in the edge of each slat C, near the end thereof, while the other end of each of said wires a is iixed in the edge ofthe strip K, so that bythe up-and-down movement of the said strip K the blind-slats C are closed and locked or opened, as the case may be.
On the inner face of the blind B abolt, L, is movable vertically in staples p, and is moved by means of a lever, M, that is pivoted at q, and has one end connected with said bolt L and the other end secured in the movable strip K.
Nis a rod passing horizontally partly through the window-frame A. from the inner face thereof, said rod N having on its inner end a crankhandle, r, while the other end of said rod is bent at right angles to reach the strip K, when the blind B is closed, and engage between the stops s, that are fixed on the face of said strip, so that When the blind B is closed the slats O G can be opened andclosed and the blind itseltl locked and unlocked by turning the crankhandle fr, and thereby moving the strip K up or down, as may be desired.
To bolt the blind the endof the bolt L is made to enter the socket 'a in the window-sill.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a blind-Slat operator, the combination, with the frame and slats, ofthe end-bent crankrodNand the strip K, having stops ss, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with. the vertical strip K and rod N, of the bolt L and lever M, substantially as shown, whereby the blind B is locked or unlocked, as set forth.
WILLIAM I. WOOSTER.
