W W BY J ATTORNEYS.
tries,
GEORGE N. CLEMSON, OF MIDDLETOVN, NEW YORK.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,756, dated June 15, 1886.
Application filed March 25, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE N. OLEMsoN, of Middletown, in the county of Orange, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawingsfiorming'a part thereof, in which Figure l is a plan View of my improved sash-fastener. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken on line at a" in Fig. -1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
The object of my invention is to'provide a simple and efiicient sash-fastener which will secure the upper and lower sashes in a closed or approximately closed position; also, to provide means for preventing the engagement of the fastener with the middle or top rail of the upper sash as one sash is moved past the other.
My invention consists in a spring-acted latch pivoted to a horizontal plate, with a nib projecting beyond the edge of the plate, and a roller carried by the latch and projecting beyond the edge of the nib, to carry the latch past the rails of the upper sash; also, in the combination, with the latch, of a catch provided with one or more notches for receiving the nib of the latch when the sashes are closed.
To the base-plate A is pivoted a horizontal latch, B, upon the screw or rivet 0, passing th rough the latch and secured in the base-plate.
Upon the side of the latch B, near the free end thereof, is formed a nib, D, which projects beyond the edge of the base-plate A, and at the end of the nib is formed a stud, E, for receiving the roller F, whose periphery projects beyond the edge of the nib D. The free end of the latch 13 is provided with a lug, a, forming, together with the stud E, a wide notch, b, for receiving the pin 0, projecting from the base-plate A; A ii at spring, G, secured to the base-plate A, near the pivot G, presses against the free end of the latch B and tends to keep the log a of the latch in contact with the pin 0, thus keeping the nib D and the roller F projected normally beyond the edge of the base-plate A.
To a base-plate, II, is secured astandard, I, in the edge of which are formed \l-shaped Serial No. 196,535. (No model.)
notches d d, for receiving the edge of the nib D. The base-plates A H are provided with countersunk holes for receiving ordinary screws for securing them to the sash. The base-plate A is secured to the meeting-rail of the lower sash with the nib D projecting over the outer edge of the rail, and the base H of the catch is secured to the meeting-rail of the upper sash, with the notched standard I in the path of the nib D. so that when the upper sash is raised or the lower sash is shut down the nib D will engage one or the other of the notches (Z d in the standard I. If the windows are prevented from going to their places in the window-frame by ice or some other ob struction, the nib D will be received in the notch d,and the window will still be securely locked. WVhen the sashes are slid past each other in opening the window, the nib D is prevented from striking the rails of the sash by the engagement of the roller F with the rails, which pushes back the latch B and carries the nib D past the rails without touching them.
The roller F is preferably made of elastic material or provided with a covering of elastic material, which prevents injury to the sashrails by engagement with the roller.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a sash-fastener, ofa base-plate, A, a spring-acted latch, 3, pivotedthereto and provided with a nib, l), and stud E, the rollcrlfijournaled on the stud, and the catch consisting of the standard I, provided with notches d 11, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, in a sash-fastener, of the base-plate A, provided with the pin 0, the latch B, pivoted to the base'plate and provided with the nib D, the stud E,and lug a, the roller F, received on the stud E, the spring G, se cured to the base-plate A and pressing the latch B, and the catch formed of the base-plate H and standard I, provided with notchesd d,
substantially as shown and described.
