Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEC BENJAMIN S. HYERS, OF PEKIN, ILLINOAIS.
IMPROVEMENT. IN SASH-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,026, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJ. S. HYERS, of Pekin, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Fastening; and I do hereby declare` that the following,` is a full, clear, and exact de scription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings7 forming part of this specitication.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a small wheel, the periphery of which is corrugated, and is also provided with teeth upon the end at the periphery and placed in a small metal box, in such a manner that it may be applied to a, window-sash, so as to fasten the sash at any desired point. l
It further consists in providing a curved rack, one end ot' which is secured inside of a small metal box by means of a pivot-bolt, so that the opposite end is allowed to move freely inside of the box`npon the said pivot-bolt.
It also consists in providing a rubber spring in combination with the rack, for the purpose of keeping the rack engaged with the small toothed wheel, making it an ornament to the window, and is one ot' the most simple, cheap, and durable window-fastenings now in use.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l is a' front elevation of my improved sash-fastening attached to a window, showing the cap or plate off. Fig. 2 represents another plan, and only shown for the purpose of anticipating the same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in cach of the figures.
A represents a wheel made of metal, and provided with teeth at the end of the periphery, and is corrugated upon its face.
B is a curved rack, also made of metal, the
teeth of which correspond with and mesh into the teeth upon the corrugated wheel A. The said rack B is secured in a metal box, C, (the cup of which is removed,) by a pivot bolt or pin, D.
E is a spring made of rubber, and placed in the metalbox (l, behind the rack B, for the purpose ot' keeping it at all times engaged with the toothed wheel A.
The box is provided with lugs o o', and secured to the side of the sash F by means of screws or other proper means.
The operation consists in raising the windowsash F, and pressing, the-lever S, which has a tendency to let the wheel drop :into a wider space below, so that it offers no resistance to the sash 5 but when the sash begins to descend' the corrugations immediately engage it, and it is held tirmly in its position.
When it is desired to lower the sash, lever S is pressed out from the window-trame, which releases the engagement of the wheel with the'f'rame, and the sash is lowered by its own weight, making it reliable and durable', and not likely to wear and get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A l. A rack, B, secured on the pivot D, when applied to a sash-fastener, t'orthe purposes and substantially as described.
\ 2. The spring E, in combination with the rack B, substantially as described. 3. The toothed wheel A, in combination with the rack B and spring E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
The above specication of myl invention signed by me this 20th day of June, 1866.
BENJAMIN S. HYERS.
