DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,053, dated August 6, 1895. Applicaion filed November 30, 1894. Serial No. 530,430. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Ross 0. SIMMONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Tawas, in the county of Iosco and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Door-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in door-fasteners.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of door-fasteners, and to provide a simple and inexpensive device capable of securely locking a door and adapted to serve as a check for the same to hold it open or partially open.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a device which will be capable of supporting the outer or free edge of the door to prevent the same from sagging.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a door provided with a fastening device constructed in accordance with this invention, the door-sill being in section to show the construction of the keeper. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the lever, the link, and the bolt, the parts being connected. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the guide-plate.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a guide-plate securedto the inner face of the door2 at the bottom thereof, and having the side edges of its lower portion bent over upon it to form flanges 3 to provide a way for a lower loop portion 4 of a verticallymovable bolt. The top of the guide-plate is provided with a perforated ear 5, receiving the stem of the bolt and forming a bearing for the upper end of a spiral spring 6, which is disposed on the stem of the bolt and interposed between the perforated ear 5 and the lower loop portion 4, whereby the verticallymovable bolt is forced downward.
The vertically-movable bolt 7 consists of the said loop-shaped lower portion 4 and a stem, which is provided at its upperend with an eye, and which is connected by a link-rod 9 with a lever 10. The link-rod is provided at its lower end with an eye which is linked into that of the bolt, and its upper end is provided with an eye that is connected by a pin or pivot 11 with the operating-lever. The sides of the loop portion of the bolt are straight and are guided in the way formed by the flanges 3 of the plate 1, and the lower end of the loop portion or bottom of the bolt is rounded, and is adapted to engage an opening 12 of a keeper 13 mounted upon a doorsill. The lower end of the bolt is received within the opening of the keeper, and the door is securely locked, and the bolt is also adapted to engage the floor, whereby the device is capable of serving as a door-check in addition to performing the function of a fastening device for lockin g a door when the latter is closed.
The spring for forcing the bolt downward serves to support the outer portion or free edge of the doorto relieve the door of stain and to prevent the same from sagging.
The operating-lever is fulcrumed at its end 14 on the door, and is provided at its other end with a handle 15, and it has adjacent to its fulcrum end a lug 16, which forms a stop for engaging the link tolimit the swing of the operating-lever, whereby the bolt may be held elevated out of engagement with the floor or door-sill when desired.
It will be seen that the device is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is capable of securely locking a door in a closed position, and of holding it open, or partly open, and that it is adapted to support the outer portion of a door to relieve the latter of strain'and to prevent the same from sagging.
