STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS MAXON, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR FOR ONE-HALE HIS RIGHT TO I. HAL. KELLY, OE SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTING-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,955, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, THOMAS MAXON, of Springfield, in the county of Clarke and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jack; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specificat-ion.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lifting-jack, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a longitudinal vertical section of my lifting-jack.
A represents a hollow post of any suitable dimensions, in which is placed avertical rack-bar, B, provided with a plate, 0, at its upper end. The post A is open the entire rear side, except immediately at the base, which is enlarged to form a foot for the post. The sides of the hollow post A are at a certain point extended toward the rear, forming ears a a, between which an eccentric lever, D, is pivoted. This lever opcrates a pawl, E, which is provided with pins, I), forming journals upon which the pawl turns, said pins or journals being inserted in vertical slots cl in the sides of the hollow post. By this means the pawl E will not only turn on its journals, but
also slide up and down when operated upon by the eccentric lever D. The pawl E is so constructed that it is not evenly balanced on its journals, but the preponderance of weight is inward, so that it will always engage with. the rackbar B. Above the sliding pawl E, and in the sides of the hollow post A, is pivoted another pawl, G, which is forced inward against the rackbar B by means of a spring, h, so as to hold the rackbar at any height to which it may have been raised by the sliding pawl.
Having thus fully described my invention, wha t I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The pawl E, provided with pins or journals 1), and sliding in the slots (1 of the post A, substantially as .and for the purposes herein set forth.
p 2. The combination of the eccentric lever D and the sliding pawl E, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the hollow post A, rackbar B with plate 0, eccentric lever D, sliding pawl E, and pawl G, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of July, 1871.
THOMAS MAXON.
