SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,262, datedFebruary 28, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JONATHAN BEIHL, of
Slippery Rock, Butler county, Pennsylvania,
- the other side with a ratchet, with which a pawl engages for holding the weights at any point when elevated, the parts being attached to a suitable standard or frame made preferably of wood.
My invention consists of the construction of the various parts, and of the arrangement and combination thereof, as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved lifting-jack. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig.3 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line as x of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4.is a similar view taken on the line y 3 of Fig. 2.
The frame or standard of the lifting-jack is, for convenience of manufacture, made of two parts, A and A, the part A being formed with the channel 1), extending from its upper end nearly to the lower end thereof, as shown in Fig. 3, the part A serving as a face-plate to cover or inolose the channel I). In the channel b is placed the rack-bar B, which meshes with and receives vertical movement from the pinion D.v This pinion is journaled in the plates F F, which are secured to the part A of the standard upon the shaft or rod 9, and
the part A of the'frame is slotted, as shown at h, Figs. 3 and 4, for the engagement of the cogs of the pinion with the cogs of the rack. The shaft or rod 9 is formed with the square enlargement i, and the power-lever J is pivoted to this enlargement by the pin j, which passes through the parts i 'i of the lever, and
rests in the groove 0, formed across one side of the enlargement, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4. By this means the leveris adapted to have a lateral or swinging movement to and from the pinion.
The side of the pinion next to the lever is formed with the studs or projections 70 k, with which the lever is adapted to engage for turning the pinion for elevating the rack-bar B and the load. The opposite side of the pinion is formed with the ratchet l, with which the pawl L, which is pivoted in a notch formed in the upper end of the part A of the frame, engages for holding the pinion from backward movement, thus holding the rack-bar and weight at any point of elevation.
In use the jack is to be placed under the weight desired to be raised and the pinion turned by operating the lever J, which will cause the rack-bar to be moved forcibly upward, carrying the weight upon it, the pawlL serving to hold the rack and weight while the leveris disengaged from the projections and being raised for a new hold upon the pinion for still further raising the weight and to hold the weight when elevated to the height desired.
To lower the weight and the rack it is only necessary to disengage the pawl from the ratchet, which will permit the rack-bar to drop to the bottom of the chamber bin the standard or support. o
By this construction it will be seen that the jack is very simple, compact, cheap of construction, and easily operated, thus making it especially adapted for use as a wagon-jack; but it may be made all of iron and upon a large scale for heavier work, if desired.
Having thus'described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a lifting-jack, the frame composed of the part A, provided with the longitudinal channel b, and the part A, provided with the sloth, and bolted to the part A, substantially as herein shown and described.
