Description

prima ditta.
IIIItAII I. WILSON, ',orMAsoN, MICHIGAN.
Leners Patent' No. 113,381, daeaaprn 11,1871.
.IMPROVEMENT iNV LlFTING-JACKS.'
= -The Schedule referred to in these Letters Paterit and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern -Be it known that I, HIRAM J. WILSON, of Mason', in the county o f Ingham and State ot" Michigan), have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and Aexact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forminga part of the same, in which- Fi'gure I representsa vertical longitudinal Vsection of my .invention taken on the line 'xx of fig-3;
Figure 2 is atransverse section ot' the saine taken through ,the line yy of li". 1; and
Figure?, is a. front elevation thereof, with its base.
and a portion of its lower end removed.
'Ihis invention relates to lifting-jacks, and consists of a sliding metallic block or bar, which is supplied with a series of apertures or receptacles, int-o which lits a removable pin or plate, vin combination with a hollow postor uprights, connectingrod, and lever, all constructed substantially as hereinafter' described.
In the several figures of the annexed drawing', similar letters of reference marked thereon indicate corresponding parts of my invention.
'Io enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertainsvto make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe vits construction and operation, which follow: i
A A, in the accompanying drawing, indicate two uprights, which are secured at their lower ends a suitable distance apart, in niortises cnt in the base A', and connected together at their upper ends by means of a metallic plate, a. B is a metallic block orbar, which is constructed on each side with a longitudinal ledge. orl way, b b, tting and sliding lin alongitudnal groove, q.', formed or cut in the inner side of each ofthe uprights AA, as seen in fig. 2.
The said block consists of two parts, one part being cut with a series of apertures, which has one of its ends open, and the other part, which is 4merely a strip or plate, being secured over the open ends of the apertures in the former part ot' said block, thereby forniingthe openings or receptacles b'b.
'lhe removable pin 'or plate C, upon which the weight' to be lifted or raised rests, and which is attached to one of the uprights A by a chain, c, may be inserted in any one of the openings or apertures b' 1J', of block B, when it is desired to put the jack in .practice.
It will be remarked that, by means of the apertures in the block B, the supporting-plate C can be placed at various heights, thereby enabling it to be'adapted to raising weights ditferent heights, which enhances con venience ot' operation.
I) ,is a connecting-rod, pivoted-at one end within an aperture or recess in the lower end of the block. B, and pivoted at its opposite or lower end to' a projection formed on'the inner end of the lever E.
The lever Elias its fulcrum ate, entering each of the uprights AA, and is. for the purpose of raising and depressing the block it being connected thereto, as already described, by means of the connecting-rod D, which is also raised and depressed by the said lever.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secureby Letters Iatent, -isf "he sliding block B b b,- supplied with. a series of apertures, b' b', in combinati-on with'the pin or supporting-plate G, uprights A A, connecting-rod D, and lever E, the block B, when elevated, being on the same vertical plate as the rod I), substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
1u testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention `I hereunto Setl my hand this '25th vday of November, 1870, in presence of two subscribing witnesses. HIItAM J. 1WILSON.
