EMPROVEMENT IN LIFTING=JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,533, dated March 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,'T11oMAs W. H. Moss- LEY, of Hyde Park, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Lifting-Jack, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
This invention consists in a lifting-jack of simple construction, having an extensible standard to form the prop, and a pair of oppos ing toggles through which to apply power to the movable section. The operator applies one foot to the near toggle and pulls with one or both hands on the other. The handle is notched to engage with pins on the opposite toggle from that to which it is permanently attached, so as to serve as a lock to support the standard at any height. A loose block,
with dowel-pins, is applied to the top of standard to lengthen the same when necessary, as for wagon-axles of unusual height.
Description of the Drawing.
The figure of the accompanying drawing is a perspective view of the improved lifting-jack partially extended, and with its extensionblock lifted, and a portion of the standard broken away to expose its guide-rod.
General Description.
formed by hinges w of any approved construction. The spaces within the lines of the base and head, at the sides of the stem of the standard, receive the toggles in their most extended or straightened state.
For operating the jack, a foot-rest, E, is applied to one toggle, 0, near its middle, and a handle, F, is correspondingly attached to the other toggle D. The handle F is attached by a pivot-bolt, w, and is composed of parallel bars 22 on the flat faces of the jack, connected at their outer end by a hand-bar, a. To look the standard at any height, pins Gr are applied to the edges of the foot-rest toggle O, and notches t are formed in the side bars 12 of the handle F, to engage therewith. An extensionblock, H, is provided to lengthen the standard when necessary, as for wagon-axles of 'un usual height. The block is furnished with dowel-pins s on its under side, and sockets r therefor are formed in the top of the head B.
Other means may be employed for operating the toggles, if preferred, and details of mechanical construction may, of course, be varied.
Claims.
The following is claimed as new:
1. The combination, in a lifting-jack, of the extensible standard composed of base A, head- B, guide-rod z, and hollow stem 4 and the opposing toggles O D, substantially as herein shown and described, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of extensible standard A B, toggles O D, foot-rest E, handle F, and locking-pins G with or without the extensionblock H, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
THOS. W. H. MOSELEY.
