Description

f @of UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
CHARLES J. IHILLEO, OF KENYONVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 93,343, dated August 3, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. PHrLLEo, of Kenyonville, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, rei erence being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the standard of a wagon-jack with two ratchets, placed upon opposite sides of the same, one ot' which provides a fulcrnm, at any desired height, for the lever which raises the wagon to work on. retain the lever in any desired position by means of a pawl. My invention also provides a short lever, which acts upon the pawl, throwing it away from the ratchet with which it engages when the main lever is pressed down.
I will proceed to describe my invention.
Ais a-n uprightpost of wood orotllermaterial, having a suitable foot, B. C and D are ratchets, which are attached to opposite sides of the post A. E is a lever, which has a mortise, F, through it, near one end, large enough to allow the post A to pass through it. Gr is a pin, which passes through the mortise F near the lower side of the lever E, and engages with the ratchets C, forming a fulcrnm.' A
The other ratchet is tov )awl H. is )laced in the mortise F in such a l y l position as to en gage with the ratchet D. 'lhe lower end of the pawl is provided with a lip, projecting downward. I is a short lever, engaging with the lip on the pawl H. The lever E is provided with an iron plate, J, on the upper side of the short end, on which the axle-tree rests.
The operation is as follows: The lever E is placed under the axle-tree and the pin G is dropped into one of the crotches in the ratchet C. When the long arm of the lever is pressed down, raising the axle-tree, the pawl H drops into the ratchet D, holding the lever in place. When it is desired to release the pawl H all that is necessary to be done is to press the lever E down until the lever I touches the ratchet D and throws the pawl H back by means of the lip on the lower end of the pawl.
IVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe arrangement and combination of the ratchets C and D, the pin G, pawl H, and lever I with the lever E and standard A, substantially as shown and described.
Signed by me this 23d day of March, 1869.
