WILLIAM GREEN, OF HOLLY, MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 82.111, dated September 15, 1868; antedateal September 7, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN LIFTING-JAOKS.
(the 5rlptult' unmet it in light? fitters fluent ant making tart at the sums.
TOv ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GREEN, of Holly, in the county of Oakland, and in the Stateof Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon. i
In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, A represents a suitable post or standard, made of any required dimensions and material.
The post A is provided with aseries of ratchet-teeth, c c, on opposite sides thereof, and ratchet-teeth, d, on its front side, as is fully shown in the drawings. The teeth 0 c are'situated or made in'the middle of the face or side of the post A, and the teeth at only extend-a part of the Way across the front of said post, thereby leaving a smooth surface at the side of the teeth.
Grooves g g, on opposite sides of the post A, are made, for the purpose of ati'ording a smooth track for the catch-dogs ff to slide down, when it is desired to let down or depress the lever G.
B represents a circular pedestal, in which is adjusted loosely the circular foot or smaller pedestal of the i post A. The circular pedestal B is provided with a suitable hole, provided with a. shoulder or flange on the upper side thereof, and the small pedestal of the post A fits neatly therein, and by putting the foot on the pedestal B, the said post, with its base, is held from turning or being drawn over by irregular pressure or weight upon one side or the other of ,the post A, and said post may be turned in the pedestal B, so as to front any way desired, without moving the base o the same 0 represents a slotted lever, adjusted over'the post A, as may be seen by reference to the drawings, the long arm of which is not shown.
This lever O is made in the form shown, the end turning up, for the purpose of aii'ording a rest and attach meiit for the object to be raised.
Secured beneath the said lever G, and catching in the teeth a c on each side of the post A, are catch-dogs ff, and a catch-dog, k, in front of said post, which catches in the teeth at. The catch-dogs ffe h are provided.
with trunnions, and curved, as shown in the drawings.
Around the trunnions of the catches ff are staples o'r loops, one driven into the lever Q, and the other working through the same, and fastened to a plate, which is adjusted over a spiral spring, m.
The spiral spring and loop are adjusted on the end next to the post, and thereby press and hold the catchdogs firmly against and in the teeth a c of post A. The catch-dog his held to the lever C by means of staples or loops. Said catch has a projection orlip, extending up through the slot of the lever G, to'which is attached one end of the spiral spring j, the other end of said spring being pinned or held firmly to the lever C. The catch, it, is thereby held close to the post A, and in the teeth 01.
K represents a forked catch, made in the form shown, and secured or adjusted to the end of the lever C, for the purpose of catching in a fence and raising the same.
By raising the lever C, the catches ff are brought up, and catch in the teeth a c, and then, by depressing the same lever, the catches ff form the fulcrum, and the catch 71, is raised into a tooth, 0?, higher, and so on, as far as may be desired. When the lever O is carried high enough, the catches ff may be brought out, so that the corners thereof will work in the grooves g g, and the catch it rest on the smooth corner of the post A, and the lever G will slip to the bottom of the post A without any trouble whatever.
This device is more especially intended for pulling hop-poles, but may be used for any purpose .for which it is adapted.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The movable pedestal B, when used in-combination with a lifting-jack, the parts being constructed and arranged as and for the-purpose specified.
2. The arrangement of the springsm m andj with the lever G, catch-dogs ff and h, the several parts being used as and for the purpose herein set forth. I v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 6th day of February, 1868.
WILLIAM GREEN.
