Description

W. G. CLINE. LIF'I'IN'G-J'ACKS.
NO. 194,893. Pate nted Sept. 4,1877.
Z3 1 Y u l3 WITNESSES INVENTOR gfiwz ATTORNEY' N4 PETERS, PHQTOZLITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. OLINE, OF CAMERON, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l94,&'93, dated September 4, 1877; application filed July 28, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. GLINE, of Cameron, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representa tion of a side view of my improved jack, and Figs. 2 and 3 are, respectively, front and rear views thereof.
This invention relates to lifting-jacks working on the leverage principle; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the bevel-ended standard, the bevel shouldered rise-bar, the link-connections, and the lateral lever, forming, when closed, a single compact upright support, having no projections liable to be accidentally moved; also, in connection with the above-mentioned parts,
Y the foot-piece and catch, all as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the standard, which may be provided with a suitable foot, B. The upper end a of this standard is beveled at an angle of about forty-five degrees, to allow for the movement of the shoulder of the rise-bar, and to fit the same neatly when in the raised or closed position. 0 represents the rise-bar, consisting of a head, b,and anarrower shank, 0, extending downward from said head, the width of which'is equal to that of the standard and shank. The rear portion of the risebar, therefore, is cut away to form a recess for the reception of the standard, and the under side of the head is beveled, as shown, to fit the beveled end of the standard when the bar is in the closed or raised position. D represents a step formed on or let into the face of the rise-bar.
The latter construction is preferred, as several steps may be provided of different heights, which may be readily slipped into place by means of the dovetail connection d, when required.
On each side of the standard and shank of the rise bar the connecting-links e are arranged, and similar links 6 are provided to connect the beveled end of the standard and shoulder of the rise-bar, one of these latter links being a part of or secured to the lateral lever. This lever E is pivoted to the side of the head I) and standard A at the bevels, and is arranged to come into the vertical position alongside the standard when the rise-bar is raised and closed against the same, the three parts thereby forming a compact post, all the parts of which run in the vertical direction, so that there will be no projecting lever or arm liable to accidental displacement.
In the vertical position of the lever and rise-bar, with the shoulder of the latter resting on the beveled end of the standard, very little is required to hold the rise-bar and its load. For this purpose a small catch, h, is provided on the lever side of the standard, and arranged to engage with the end of the lever in its depressed position.
In order to prevent the end of the lever from being worn by the catch, a plate, k, may be let into the same, and a foot-piece, f, extending laterally from the lower end of the lever affords a convenient means for depressingthe same, without stooping.
I prefer to make the plate It and foot-piece fin one piece, as indicated in the drawings.
What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The liftingjack, consisting of the bevelended standard A, the bevel-shouldered risebar 0, having the step D, and connection d, the lateral lever E, and the catch h, and links e, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM G. OLINE.
