IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,768, dated March 26, 1878 yapplication filed February 16, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. A. FOSTER, of Chester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Carriage-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my improved jack, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof.
This invention has relation to lifting-jacks; and it consists, mainly, in the construction and novel arrangement of the swinging fulcrum-bar, the cheek-plates, and the round-end lever in connection with the slotted standard and head-block, wherebythe parts are strongly braced together, and at the same time readily adjusted and operated, as hereinafter shown and described. v
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents the standard, which is slotted from its upper end downward for a portion of its length, to receive the adjustable end a of the swinging fulcrum bar B, the other end of which is pivoted in a slot or recess, b, near the end of the operating-lever C. The upper end of the fulcrum-bar is secured in position in the slot of the standard bymeans of apin, c, which is passed through one of a series of transverse perforations, e 0, made through the slot-walls of the standard. i
D indicates the head-block, which is preferably notched to form seats 01 at different heights, for convenience in adjusting it to the article to be lifted. To this head-block, on each side, are secured the cheek plates or bars E, which pass back on each side of the standard, and project in rear thereof sufficiently to receive between them the end of the operatinglever, which turns upon a pivot-pin, g, passing through said end, and secured to the rear middle portion of each cheek-p1ate on each side. Thepivot-pin h, which secures the lower end of the fulcrum-bar, is applied a little in rear of the pin g, asshown in the drawings.
The rear edge is of the head block is in con tact with the front face of the standard, and slides thereon when the operating lever is moved. It is made of sufficient length, and the points of attachment thereto of the cheekplates are sufficiently far apart to secure a good bearing and a firm bracing action. against the rounded end 2 of the operating-lever, which is located in rear of the middle portion of the head-block, and is so formed as to be always in contact with the rear face of the standard. In this manner the head-block is firmly braced against the standard by the round-end lever in rear, whether the latter be in the raised or depressed position. When in the latter situation, with the head-block raised under a weight, the lever is automatically held down because of the relative position of the lower pin of the swinging fulcrum-bar, which is then below the pin 9 of the cheek-bars, and a little nearer the standard, the fulcrumbar being a little curved or cut away, so as. to pass around said pin 9 in this position.
I am aware that it is not new to employ a swinging fulcrum in connection with other operative parts forming a liftin g-j ack, and hence I do not broadly claim such invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a liftingjack, with a head-block, D, and round-end lever C, respectively bearing against the standard in front and rear, of the cheek-connections E and the swinging fulcrum B, substantially as specified.
