To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, LORA B.'HOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon or Lifting Jacks,
of which the following is a specification, refer-` ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention is designed more lparticularly to increase the strength of such implements, as also to add to their general utility.
Figure l is a perspective view of the invention, showing it in the position which it occu-` of the standard, from a point about central of its height down toward the base, is provided with notches a', opening downward at an angle, as shown, and the upper part ot' said edge `is guarded or strengthened by an iron re-enforcing strap, C,which is riveted or bolted to the standard, as represented. The upper portion of the rear edge of vthe standard is also provided with larger notches, o, which open upward at an angle, as shown. The material about the lower portion of these notches is strengthened by rivets d, which are passed through thestandard and riveted over in countersunk holes formed in the face of the bar or i p plate C.
D is a lever, which is longitudinally slotted atb, so as to adapt it to t over the standard in the manner shown. Each side of the for ward end of said lever is preferably strengthened by a metallic plate, f, the platesbeing riveted to the lever and to each other by rivets g. The central rivet, g, constitutes the fulcrum of the lever, and is adapted to rest in any ward or lower end of the shackle orlink is it- 6o ted to enter any ot' the notches a at the front edge of the standard.
In operation, when by pressing on the lever the wagon is raised to the proper height, the shackle or link E drops into one of the notches a', the weight of the wagon upon the outer eX tremity of the lever drawing the shackle or link against the standard and not directly upon the material surrounding the notches a. The fulcrum-pin d resting in one of the notches c at the rear edge of the standard, the weight of the wagon or object sustained, were not precautions taken against such a result, might tend to fracture the material of the standard at that point.` To avoid this the rivets dare employed, upon which the weight is very largely brought. The plate H, at the outer extremity of the lever, by its lip h, prevents the axle or other object from slipping from the lever. `The strap C, in addition to strengthening the standard, also serves to protect the front edge of the standard from becoming bruised or worn by the contact of the axle or other object raised. When the work-such as greasing the axleis done and the wheel is to be let down, the lever must be depressed, so as to remove the strain from the shackle or link. It must then be pushed out of the notch, when the short end or arm of the lever sustaining the axle can be allowed to fall gradually.
The notches a' and c should be about two iuchesapart, so as to give an easy pitch to the lever and to suit all heights of carriages.
Fig. 3 shows a modication in the construe` TOO ard. rlhis modification is not claimed by me as a part of' the invention, as I am aware that similar plates have been heretofore employed. rIhe material surrounding the notches on the front edge ot' the standard not receiving the strain directly, means for strengthening them are not so necessary; but, ifdesired, they may be formed in a plate inserted in the same manner as the plate above described.
My improvements insure strength, cheapness, utility, and simplicity in the nlannfactur and use of the implement.
I claim as my invention- In a Wagon or lifting jack, a standard provided at its front edge with a re-enforcing strap and with notches opening downward7 and at its rear edge with notches opening upward, the material aboutr the latter being strengthened by rivets passed through the standard. and strap, as described, combined with a slotted lever having a fnlcrum adapted to rest in one of the notches at the rear edge of the standard, and with a loosely-hung shackle or link fitted to enter any ot' the notches at the front edge of the standard, substantially as specied.
