WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
WILLIAM SUHENKER, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
LIFTlNG-JA CK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,833, dated May 9,1882.
ing-jack. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the hand-lever, and Fig. 4 shows a modification of the same.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to lifting-jacks and it consists in certain improvements in the con-- .struction of the'same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the upright or standard, which is provided with a vertical groove or recess, G, to
receive the extension-slide B, which is retained in said groove by suitable clampingplates, 0. I r
D is a lever, which is provided at its end with a curved slot, E, through which passesa pin, F, by which said lever is pivoted to standard or upright A, adjoining the groove G. In the upper side of slot E is formed a notch, H, adapted to engage the pivoting-pin F, and thus forming the fulcrum of the lever.
The extensionslide B is provided with a series of laterally-projecting pins or studs, 1, any one of which may be engaged by the handlever D, as will be presently described.
J is alatch or catch pivoted to the side of upright A, and having notches K capable of engaging the pins or studs I of the extensionslide, so as to retain the latter in any position to which it may be adjusted.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The inner slotted end of the lever D be ing adjusted between any two of the pins or studs I upon the extension-slide, its outer end is depressed, thus raising or lifting the extension-slide until the latch J may engage one of the pins or studs I, and thus hold the slide in position. If it is necessary to raise the slide still higher, the notch H is disengaged from Application filed February 16, 1882. (Model.)
the pivot-pin F, thus enabling the lever to be drawn backuntil its inner end may beadjusted under the pin or stud I next below the one upon which it previously acted, when the operation may berepeated.
When any very low articles are to be lifted I av'ail myself of the rest or bracket P, which may be screwed or otherwise secured upon one of the lower pins or studs I, as shown in the drawings. The operation is obvious.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown a modification of the lever D, which consists in simply omitting the slot E and substituting a laterally-projecting pin, R, which prevents the lever from being withdrawn from under the clamping-plate, through which the pivotingpin F passes. V The lever has the pivotingnotch H, by which it works upon pin F, so as to be readily disengaged from the said pin when in operation it shall be desirable to do so.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- 1. In a lifting-jack, the combination of th uptight or standard A, having vertical groove G, the extension-slide B, having pins or studs I, and the adjustable hand-leverD, substantially as set forth. V
2. In a lifting-jack, the combination of the vertically-grooved upright or standard, the extension-slide provided with pins or studs I, and the lever D, having slot E, provided with notch H, by which it'is fulcrumed upon the upright or standard, substantially as set forth.
3. As an improvement in lifting-jacks, the combination of the vertically-grooved upright or standard, the extension-slide B, having gpius or studs I, the lever D,having slot E,pr0- vided with notchH, and the notched latch J, all arranged and operating substantially as set forth.
4. In a lifting-jack, the combination of the vertically-grooved upright, the extension-slide B, having pins or studs I, the rest or bracket P, adjustable upon said pins or studs, and suitable operating mechanism, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM SOHENKER.
