WAGON-JACK.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 265,752, dated October 10, 1882,

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MORTIMER OAHILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at J acksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVagon-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lifting-jacks, the objects thereof being to provide a jack simple and durable in its construction, effective in its operation, capable of ready adjustment to objects of different heights, and which can be cheaply manufactured. These objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawing, and hereinafter described and claimed.

The figure in the accompanying drawing is a perspective view of my invention, wherein- A represents a base-plate, having lugs 00, to which are riveted upright curved standards B, formed of one piece of metal so. bent as to be closed at its upper outer end and admit of a space between its sides or standards B for the working of the several operating parts.

Near the upper outer end, and placed between the standards B, is a rack-bar, O, hawing a cross-head, 1), upon which rests the object to be raised, this said bar operating between a guide brace-piece, 0, and a weighted catch, D, and raised by means of a link, (1, secured to the end of a lever, E, engaging with the notches upon the edge of said rack-bar. The lever E is pivoted between the curved upright standards B by means of a bolt, 0, and when desired to elevate the rack-bar is raised until the link d, secured to its end, engages with a notch upon the edge of said rack-bar, when it is pressed down, elevating the rackbar until the catch D is caused by its weighted end f to automatically drop into and engage with another of the notches upon this said bar, the weighted catch being pivoted between the upright standards at 9. When the weighted catch has engaged with the notch upon the i rack-bar it firmly holds the said bar at the elevation to which it has been raised, while the link drops to engage with another notch, thus allowing the gradual elevation to any given height of the object to be raised according to the length of the rack-bar. The rack-bar before mentioned is prevented from any lateral displacement at its bottom by means ot'a crossplate, h, and brace guide-piece t The manner of forming the standards from one piece of metal and bending it, as shown its strength, but renders it capable of manufactureia-t a greatly reduced cost, and admits of a removal of its several operating parts to facilitate packing; and, should anyot' the parts become worn out or broken, they may be readily replaced at a small cost by any ordinary workman; also, by havingthe standards curved in the manner shown and described, all the dead weight comes entirely upon the rack-bar.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with the rack-bar U and the lever E and link 01, of the standards B, formed from a. single piece of metal and bent in the form shown and described, substantiallyas and for the purpose specified.

2. A liftingjack consisting of the base-plate A, upright curved standards B, and crossheaded rack-bar O, operated by means of the link d and lever E, said rack-bar being held at any desired elevation by means of the weighted catch I),substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination, with the upright curved standards B, constructed substantially as described, and the cross-headed rack-bar (J, of the lever E, link d, weighted catch D, baseplate A, having lugs a, and the guide-brace pieces h i, all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
