Be it known that I, LEMUEL FURMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michi-' gan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and nsethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of l eference mark ed thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in lifting -jacks; and it consists in the arrange ment, construction, and combination of the parts in such a manner as to form a simple, strong, and durable device, which may be quickly changed to act upon wagons of differ ent heights. and which may be easily constructed and operated.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved lifting-jack with a portion of the lever cutaway. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3is a perspective view of a detached portion of the same.

a represents a horizontal bed-piece, and b b are end braces, the lower ends of which are securely fastened to the bed-piece a, and extending upward in a diagonal direction toward each other. Their upper ends are secured to each other by the bolt 0. The upper ends of these braces b are provided with the slot (Z, into which is placed the lower end ot'the vertical standard e, and is therein held by the bolt f, which passes through the side braces, 71, and end braces, b, and securing the whole firmly together. These side braces, 7L, are constructed of one piece of iron, of suitable size, bent in a proper manner to form a horizontal portion, 1', at a proper distance above the upper ends of the end braces, Z), and extending downward to opposite sides of thebraces 12, where they are secured by the bolt f, are still extended downward and secured to opposite sides of the bed-piece a by the bolt 9. The portion 'i is provided with a suitable hole into which is placed the upper end of the vertical standard 6. This standard 6 is provided on one of its edges with the steps Z, and on its opposite edge with a corresponding number of notches, m.

On the upper edge of the lever a, and with one end adapted to engage with the notches m, is placed the sliding catch r. This catch 1" is provided with the slots t, through which pass the screws 8, and has its outer end turned up, forming a handle, a. The screws 8, after passing through the slot t, are firmly driven into the lever a, leaving their heads above and extending over the sliding catch 1" in such a manner as to hold the catch r firmly in position upon the lever, and still to allow it to be moved endwise.

To operate, the outer end of the lever a is raised, and the shorter end also is raised or lowered to allow the bolt p to engage with the proper step Z, to adjust the lever to the height of the article to be raised. The longer end of the lever is then pressed downward until the sliding catch 1 can be engaged with the proper notch m-,where it will remain until released by again withdrawing the catch 1'.

\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a liftingjack, the bed-piece a, the diagonal braces I), having their lower ends secured to the bed piece and their upper ends secured together, and provided with the slot (1, and the vertical standard 6, with its lower end resting within the said slot at, and having on one edge the steps Z and on its opposite edge the notches m, in combination with the side braccs, h, on opposite sides of the said standard 6, and with their upper ends joined together and to the said standard 6 by the part i, the bolt f, securing the central portion of the side braces, h, to the diagonal braces d and the standard 6, and the bolt 9, securing the lower ends of the side braces, 71, to the bed-piece a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
