To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILO H. INGALLs, of North Granville, in the county of Washing ton and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lifting-Jack, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved lifting-jack which can be used for raising wagons and other objects, and which can easily be adjusted to raise objects different elevations or heights from the floor.
The invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts and details, as will be fully set forth hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure l is a side View of my improved lifting-jack. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same, partly raised. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on the line a: as, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view on the line 3 y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the sliding part. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the pinions.
The standard A,having the side edge-flanges, A A is secured on a base, B, and on the inner surface of one of the flanges A a rack, G, is formed.
Between the flanges A a plate, D, slides, which has flanges D D extending from the top to a diagonal or transversepartition, E, forming a compartment, F, at the lower end of the sliding plate D.
A band, G, is secured to the top of the standard A and surrounds the sliding plate D, and a band, H, secured to the lower end of the sliding piece D, surrounds the'standard A.
On the inner surface of the flange D a rack, J, is formed within the compartment F, and engages with a pinion; K, formed on the end of the arm L of an angular lever, L.
The part K of the pinion K projects from the side of the arm L in such a manner that it can engage with the rack O on the flange A In one side of the arm L a groove, M, is formed, containing a slide, N, from which a pin, 0, projects through a vertical slot, P, in
the lower part of the plate D. The said slide N has a shoulder, N, adapted to engage with a shoulder, M, in the edge of the groove M.
The operation is as follows: The lever L is swung up, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the smooth or straight edge of the projecting part K of the pinion K faces the rack 0, thus permitting of raising the plate D more or less, until its top rests against the body to be raised. When the plate D has been raised as far as desired, the lever L is swung down in the direction of the arrow a. The teeth of the pinion part K engage with the rack 0, thus forming a fulcrum, and the teeth in the pinion K and part K engage with the rack J and raise the same and the plate D, the slide N sliding to the bottom of the groove M, and thus locking the parts in place, as it prevents turning the lever L with the end of the arm L as a fulcrum. If an attempt should be made to swing the lever L in the inverse direction of the arrow a, the pin 0 would be forced against the edge of the slot P, and would prevent such movement of the said lever. When the pin 0 and slide N are raised to the top of the groove M, the pin and fulcrum coincide, and the lever L can be swung up to bring the straight edge of the pinion part K opposite the rack O. v
The relative positions of the pinion K and rack J remain the same, and the part D can be raised the same distance by the pinion, whether the part D is raised or lowered.
The relative positions of the pinion part K and the rack O are changed by raising or lowering the part D.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj 1. The combination, with a lever having a pinion on its end, of a standard in which a rack is formed, and a sliding piece in the standard, on which sliding piece a rack is also formed opposite the rack formed on the standard, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with an angle-lever having a pinion on its end, of a standard on which a rack is formed, a sliding part in the standard also provided with a rack, and of a slide in the lever provided with a pin passing through a slot in the sliding part in the standard, substantiallyas herein shown and described. v
3. The combination, with the standard A, provided with the rack C, of the sliding part D, provided with a rack, J, and a slot, P, of
the angle-lever L, having a groove, M, and
froni the same through theslot P, and the bands G and H, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The lever L, having a pinion, K, part of which projects from the side of the lever and has a straight edge, substantially as herein shown and described.
'6. The angle-lever L, having the groove M in its short arm and the pinion K on the end, which pinion has part projecting from the side 'of the lever and provided with a straight edge,
substantially as herein shown and described.
