THE NORRIS PETERS c SAMUEL B. HAGKETT, OF RAY, INDIANA.
GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1908.
Application filed December 12, 1907. Serial No. 406,124.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. ITIACKETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ray, in the county of Steuben and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description-of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in gates.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction and arrangement of gate in which supporting hinges are dispensed with and the gate adapted to have a loose sliding and swinging engagement with the gate post.
With this object in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the same in closed position; Fig. 2 is a top plan view, showing the gate in closed position in full lines and in open position in dotted lines; Fig. 3 is a side view of the gate showing the same closed and in an elevated position, the latch post being shown in vertical section; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the pivot post, and the gate supporting pin arranged thereon.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the gate post, on which is arranged a right-angularly projecting gate supporting pin, 2. The pin 2 is arranged on the post 1 at a suitable elevation and projects therefrom at an angle of about 45. In the upper side of the pin 2, adjacent to the inner end of the same are formed diagonally arranged intersecting notches, 3, which provide a seat with which the gate is adapted to be engaged and in which the same may be slid back and forth and swung to an open or closed position.
The gate, 4, is here shown as being formed of a series of longitudinally disposed parallel slats, 5, which are connected at their opposite ends by cross pieces 6, and between said ends by a cross piece, 7. The slats 5 of the gate are continued or projected beyond the inner end of the gate to form latching lugs, 8, which, when the gate is in a closed position,
are adapted to be engaged with a series of locking recesses, 9, formed in the latch post, 10, of the gate, said latch post being arranged on the opposite side of the road or walk' and in line with the gate supporting post, 1.
When the gate is arranged in operative position, one of the slats 5 thereof is engaged with the pivot notches 3 in the supporting pin, 2. The gate is held in sliding engagement with the supporting pin 2 by means of the notches, 3, and by providing intersecting notches arranged as hereinbefore described, the gate after being slipped back far enough to disengage the latching lugs from the locking recesses in the latch post, is swung around to an open position on the pin. When it is desired to close the gate the same is swung back on the pin 2 to a closed position, after which the gate is slipped forward to engage the latch lug 8 with the recess 9, thereby holding the same in closed position.
In order that the gate may be held in engagement with the notches, 3, in the supporting pin against casual disengagement, I may, if desired, provide a retaining pin 12, which is inserted in the gate post and projects at right angles therefrom immediately above one of the slats or rails 5 of the gate. By engaging different slats or rails 5 with the notches 3 in the pin 2, the gate may be held at different heights or elevations, thus providing means whereby stock may be sorted, the elevation of the gate above the ground permitting the smaller animals to pass beneath the same, while cattle and larger stock will be held back.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: j
1. In a gate of the character described, a gate post, a gate supporting pin secured in said post, said pin having formed therein angularly disposed intersecting guide notches, a gate having a series of longitudinally disposed parallel slats or rails, one of which is adapted to be engaged with the notches in said supporting pin whereby the gate is slidably and pivotally supported and guided on said pin, a gate retaining pin arranged in said post in position to hold the gate in the guide groove of said supporting pin when the gate is closed, but which will permit the removal of the gate from the supporting pin when in an open osition, a latch post, and means to engage t e free ends of the gate with said post, substantially as described.
2. In a gate of the character described, a
gate post, a gate supporting pin secured in said post, said pin having formed therein angularly disposed intersecting guide notches, a gate having a series of longitudinally disposed parallel slats or rails, one of Whichis adapted to be engaged with the notches in said supporting pin whereby the gate is slidably an pivotally supported and guided on said pin, a gate retaining pin arranged in said post in position to hold the gate in the guide groove of said supporting pin when the gate is closed, but which will permit the removal of the gate from the supporting pin when in an open position, a latch post having formed therein a series of locking recesses, and latch 15 lugs formed by the projecting ends of the rails of the gate and adapted to engage said locking recesses when the gate is in a closed position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 20 my hand in presence of two subscribing wit IlGSSGS.
