SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,209, dated September 11, 1888.

Be it known that I, ABIATHER T. Fara lBROTHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Janesville, in the county of Bremer and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cattle-Stanchions, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in cattle-stanchions, having for its Object to provide suitable and simple means for locking the movable bar thereof in place and also to enable the same to be readily and quickly released when desirable.

The invention consists in a certain novel construction and arrangementof parts for service, fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, where- 1n- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stanchion embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, showing the movable bar locked in full lines and Open in dotted lines.

Referring to the drawings, Adesignates the rack of the stanchion, comprising the vertical side bars Or posts, c a, the parallel bottom bars, b b, affixed at their ends on opposite sides of the lower ends of the vertical bars or posts, and the parallel top bars, c c, affixed at their ends on opposite sides of the upper ends of the said vertical bars or posts. The movable bar D is pivoted at its lower end between the parallel bottom bars, and its beveled upper end operates between the upper parallel bars.

E designates a frame, which is secured to the upper bars of the rack, and consists of the parallel bars e e, arranged across the space between the upper bars Of the rack, and said frame being secured to the rack by depending ears e e', which are held in place by screws, bolts, or similar means. The upper bar, e, of the frame is provided with an aperture, e, in which is mounted the shank fof the latch F, and the head f of the latch operates in an opening, e, in the lower bar, e. A

spring, G, is coiled on the shank of the latch, between the bars e e, and bears at its lower end on the shoulders f 2 f2 on opposite sides of the shank at the upper end Of the movable bar D when the latter is in its closed position, as shown in Fig. 2 in full lines.

On a suitable vertical standard, H, on the upper bar of the frame E, is mounted the operating-lever I, which is pivoted at its end t0 the upper end of the latch, and is adapted, when its free end is depressed, to raise the latch and free the upper end of' the movable bar D, which is thrown by the spring` arm or extension g into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The lower end of the latch is rounded and the upper beveled end of the movable bar D is provided with a metallic wear-plate, d, whereby, when the latter is swung into its closed position, the beveled end thereof raises the latch sufficiently to allow the bar to pass, after which the latch is returned to its normal or engaging position by the spring G. Vhen the operating-lever is depressed, the movable bar is thrown automatically into its Open position by the spring arm or extension g.

Having thus described the invention, I claim- 1. In a cattle stanchion, the movable bar D, in combination with the vertical latch F, mounted in a suitable frame, and having the shouldersjmfz, the operating'lever connected to the latch, and the spring coiled on the latch and provided with a curved extension or arm adapted to bear at its end against the free end of the movable bar, whereby the latter is automatically opened, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a cattle-stanchion, the rack A, and the movable bar D, pivoted at its lower end in the rack and having a beveled upper end, the vertical latch F, 'mounted inopenings in a suitable frame affixed to the rack, the operating-lever mounted on astandard on the said frame and pivoted at one end to the up` per end of the latch, and the spring C, coiled On the latch and provided with the curved arm or extension g, integral with the lower end of the spring and bearing against the free end ofthe bar D when the latter is in its closed position, substantially as specified.
