IMPROVED CARRIAGE-JACK The Schedule referred to in 'these Letters Paten't and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it 'may Aconcern Be it known that I, D ArvIEL BULL, of Amboy, in the county of Lee, and State of' Illinois, have invented a new amlvvaluableV Improvement in Lifting-Jacks; and I do'hereby declare that the following is va full, clear, and exact description ofA the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, Iand to the letters and figures of' reference marked thereon.

My invention relate;` to lifting-jacks;` nd consists mainly in the constructionia-nd novel arrangement of devices, whereby a jack ofextraordinary power is produced, easily raised, automatically fastened, and readily lowered.
The letter A, of the drawings, designates the frame of the lifting-jack, made of iron, wood, or other strong material.
It consists of the bed-piece a, made broad to afford a good foundation, and prevent slipping, the rack-bars A A', brace b, and collar C.
Dis the lifting-har, which passes up through the collar C, and at its lower end is pivoted bctweenthe chucks H K of the operating lever G, by the pin e.
' G represents the operating lever, slotted to receive the rack-bars A' A.
The lever is formed of' one piece, with exception of -the plate H, forming a wall ofthe slot and secured to the niain portion of the lever byf'our screws, bI b'.
Between `the walls H and K, on each side of -the lower endV of the lifting-bar D, are pivoted, by means ofthe fulcrum-pins c c, the dogs L L, -in such a manner that their lower ends will engage with the horizontal faces of the teeth of the rack-bars.
The liftingbar'.D, at its lower end and on the side next -the ,removable plate H, is recessed to receive a forked spring, V.
This spring embraces the lower end of a projecting ridge, d, in the lifting-bar, and, passing up on each side of this ridge, is clamped by the small lugs i t', and then its free ends expand upward and outward, -in such a manner that when this spring V is pushed up to its highest limit, its expanded ends will engage with the upper ends ot' the dogs L L, pressing them toward the rack-bars, and thus causing their lower ends alternat-ely to clear the teeth when the lever is worked\in the descending movement.
Or, it' a quick descent is desired, a jerk upon the handle of the lever, either upward or downward, will cause a downward alternate movement of` the dogs, which will bc continued antolnaticaly, the hand being removed from the lever.
When the spring V is -pushed-down, it has no effect on the dogs L L, which then pass under the control of' t-he smaller spring s, lying in a recess in the wall K ot' the lever, and attached to the stud :in the upper part of this recess.
Theends of the spring s expand downward and outward, and enga-ge directly with thc lower arms of the dogs LL, pressing them ont in such a manner that their lower ends, under tllewvorkingl oi' the lever, will alternately engage with the teeth of' the rack-bars. I n
this manner the pills c c become alternately/- the fulcra of' the lever G.
That this lifting-jack may be made of immense power, is evident from the short distance obtained between the fulcra c c and the pin e, upon which the weight rests.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The' reciprocating rack-bars A' A', arranged on the standards to afford alternate support to the fulcra of the lever G of a lifting-jack, as specified.
2. The double fulcrum-lever G,'witlr 'its dogs L L, when combined with double standards having ratchcts, as described, and when arranged to operate as set forth.
I 3. In combination with the spring s, lifting-bar D, and double fulcrum-'lever G,having dogs L L working on the rack-bars A A', the sliding spring'V, constructed and arranged to operate as specified.
