RANDOLPH F. IIAGEMAN, OF NEIV MADISON, OIIIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,635, dated July 2, 1878; application filed June 1, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANDOLPH F. HAGE- MAN, of New Madison, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of vertical sectional view of my liftingjack, and Fig. 2 is a detail view of flange.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a liftingjack, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents the foot of my lifting-jack, which is made in circular or other suitable form, and from which rises a hollow standard, B, as shown. This hollow standard may be of any desired dimensions, and r ceives within it another hollow post or standa d, O, which may be adjusted at any desired height, and is held by means of a set-screw, D, passing through one side of the main standard B.
The standard 0 is provided with a longitudinal slot, (1, on one side near the top, and on each side of this slot is a projection or flange, E, which has a slot, 6, through it, as shown. Between the flanges E E is placed a cogged segment, F, which is formed upon the inner end of the operating-lever G, and a pin, 1), passing through. said segment, passes also through the slots 0 in the flanges E, as shown.
Within the standard 0 is a movable rackbar, I, passing through a slot in the cap or top plate, H, of said standard, and this rackbar is operated by the lever G and its cogged segment F.
In the upper ends of the flanges E E is pivoted a curved pawl, J, having a handle or linger-piece, J and a spring, J", to throw the pawl into the rack-bar. The rack-bar is at its upper end provided with a head, L, as shown.
The operation of the lifting-jack is as follows: It is placed under the wagon-axle or other article to be raised, and the standard O is raised by hand until the head L of the rack-bar is in contact, or nearly in contact, with the axle, when said standard is fastened in the main standard or column B by means of the set-screw D. The lever Gr is then raised and the segment F pushed inward to engage with the rack-bar I. By now pressing down on said lever the rack-bar will be raised, lifting the wagon or other article, and the pawl J, dropping by the action of the spring into the rack-bar, prevents the same from going down again.
If one movementof the lever is not suflicient to raise the article to the desired height, the lever is moved outward in the slots to till the pin 1) is at the outer ends of said slots, when the cogged segment will be disengaged from the rack-bar, and the lever can be raised, pushed inward to engage the segment with the rack-bar, and the same operation repeated over and over again as often as may be necessary.
To lower the wagon or other article supported upon the jack, the rack-bar is slightly raised to allow of the pawl J being thrown outward from the rack-bar, when the wagon can be let down without any trouble.
I am aware that it is not new in liftingjacks to use arack-bar and a movable lever with cogged segment to engage therewith; hence I do not claim such, broadly, as my i11- vention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The movable standard O, provided with the longitudinal slot and slotted flanges E c, in combination with the fixed standards A B, the set-screw D, the toothed lever F G, spring pawl J J J and rack-bar I L, combined and operating as set forth, for the purpose specifled.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
RANDOLPH FOSTER HAGEMAN.
