Description

@with -tatrs gattini ffinr,
FRANCIS ARNOLD, yor HADDAM NECK7 CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 79,430, dated June 30, 1868.
-Ill/IIROVED WAGON-JACK.
'ITO ALL WHOM-IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS ARNOLD, of Hadda'm Neck, in the county of Middlesex, and in' the State ot' Connecticut, have invented certain new'and usefulfImprovements in Wagon-Jacks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification- Figure 1 represents a side view of the wagonjacli ready for use,
Figure 2, a bottom view of the tongue, and
Figure 3 a bottom view of the side-holder or collar.
The nature of my invention consi-sts in a collar, which is to be adjusted with a -set-screw, or any other suitable device, to an upright post, and in'providing it with a movable'tongue and lever, to raise the axle oi' a Wagon for any purpose desired. i p
` To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. I Y
In the annexed drawings, Arepresents the upright post, on to which the side-holder or Collar, B, is adjusted in the most c onvenientmanner, so that the machine can be usedor any wagon, whether high or low. The sideholder or collar B yis made of cast iron, -with a hole through it, to fit the p'ost A, as shown' in iig. 8, and on its side are two journals, a a, with lugs b b on one side of them, all cast together in one piece. These journals-a a are for the 'purpose of fastening th'e tongue'C and lever'I), both of which are'made of c ast iron, and have holes 'through thc-m, with slots c c on the side of the holes, to t the journals and their lugs. By this 'arrangement Y the tongue and lever can be put on and' taken off without the .trouble of taking out and insertinfblr pins. The tongue C has on its top or upper side corrugations, toy lay the axle in, as shownin fig. 1, and on its bottom side rims cl d, which form a groove for the lever to work in, so that it will not slip off from thetongne. The rims d fl are shown' in iig; 2. The lever I) is pivoted on one of thejonrnals a, and lifts the tongue C, so that, when it is placed under the wagon, it will raisehe axle, and thewheel can be taken o, if desired.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. The adjustable 'collar B, with hole to t post A. and provided with journals a a and lugs IJ b, arranged substantial-ly as and-for thepnrposes herein set forth. n v
2. The Amovable tongue @with corrugations on its upper side, and the rims'd d on its lower side, substantially ns and for the purposes herein` set forth'. Y
The combination of the adjustable collar B, movable tongue C, and` movable lever D, arranged and operating substantiallyT as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimny that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 23d day of April, 1868.
FRANCIS ARNOLD.
