KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:

That I, WILLIAM BROWN, of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements-in Sofa-Beds; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved sofa-bed, showing'the back upright, to be used- -as a sofa.

Figure 2 represents an end view, the baci; being turned down, to be used as a bed.

Figure 3 represents a. side view of one ofthe pieces or detachable legs for supporting the back when let down, as shown in iig. 2v, and v i -t Figure 4 represents a rear view of the device for` holding the back in position when used as a sofa, as shown in iig. 1. Q

To enable those skilled in the art .to whichl my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail. v

l The nature of my invention consists or relates- First, to certain peculiar devices for holding the hack upright, and

Second, to certain peculiar devices for supporting the haclrfwhen turned down, as will be more fully described hereafter. i y r The sofalbed consists of the seat A, hinged back,lB, and stationary arms, C C. `Drawers, DD, are alsol inserted in the lower part ofthe frame E, as shown inthe drawings, for the reception of bedding or other articles.

From the rear end of the arms C C project loops a a', while plates, cZ d, are fastened to the ends of the back, B, and arranged in such positions that, when the back is raised, the upper ends of plates d d will pass upon the inner sides ofthe loops a a, thus bringing the holes e e in the plates d d upon a line with the holes=in the loops a a', whereby the bent ends f of the spring-arms g, which pass through the holes in the loops a a', will springinto the holes e e oi the plates d d, thereby holding the back, B, upright, as shown in fig. 1.

The legs, G, are stiifened and retained in secure positions by the detachable pieces or legs H H, the taper. ing ends I of which enter the hollow hinged legs G, while their horizontal ends J pass between the loops a a', where they are held by theendsff of the spring-arms g, which pass through the holes/t' in the ends J. (See iig. 2, which shows the relative positionA of the parts when the back is let down to be used as a bed.) l

To use as a. sofa, raise the back until the holes e e in the plates d d come in line with the loops a a', when the ends ff of the spfing-armsg g will pass through the holes e e in the plates d d, and securely hold the back, B, in the elevated position shown.

To use as a. hed, spring out the endsff, and turn down the back, B, to. a horizontal position. Unfold the hollow metallic legs G G for supports Then insert the ends I I of the piccesI-I H, into the hollow metallic leos G G, and place .the other ends of the pieces H between the loops a a', and passthe ends ff of the spring- :irms g g through the holes z' in the ends J J of the pieces II. g

If desirable to puck for transportation, or any other purpose, the back, Bmcan he turned down on tothe seat A. The bedding-pieces, or legs H, and other articles, can be packed in the drawers, thereby bringing the whole into a very compact and portable form.

` My improved sofa-bed is very simple in construction, and the parts are not liable to break. Again, the various adjustments can be made very quickly, and do not require any great skill.'

In lieu of the hinged legs G G, loops, onsimilar devices, may be fastened to the hinged back for holding the combined detachable head-bonrds-onfl legs H in place, when in position, as shown in g. 2.

It will be observed that the detachable pieces H serves as head ondioot-boards for one-half of the bed. Having described 4my improved sofa-bed', what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Leters'Patent, is-

1. The dombination,with the sofa-bed, of the pieces c2 d and loops, a a', or either, and the spring-armsgg, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combnatiomwith t'he hinged legs G G and loops a', of the pieces or legs H and arms, g, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. The combined head-boards and detacbn'ble legs H, substantially as described.
