WASHING-MACHINE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,981, dated October 28, 18156.

To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that we, JosrAH h IUMroRD and JOHN IV. VILSON, of Clarksburg, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Washing-Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l, represents a perspective view of the entire machine. Fig. 2, represents a top view o-f the removablerubbing board. Fig. 3, represents a vertical central section through the machine.

Similar letters of reference where they occur denote like pants of the machine in all the figures.

The nature of our invention relates to the peculiar construction of the rubbing board in rotary washing machines, so that the collars and wristbands of shirts, or any other soiled portion of a garment may be washed and rubbed, without washing or rubbing the whole of said garment, and unnecessarily wearing it out.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention we will proceed to describe the same with refernce to the drawings.

A represents a stand Ior frame, in the two cross pieces of which, is supporteda tub B, by means of a spindle or shaft C, upon which it can freely revolve-said shaft or spindle, passing through the upper one of the cross pieces, and having a step a, in the lower crosspiece. The tub B, is furnished with a series of handles or knobs b, by which it may be turned or whirled in either direction on its spindle, bythe operator.

The tops of the uprights of the frame, are slotted as at c, c, and in said slots are let tenons, formed on the rubber bar D, at each of its ends, so that said bar may be lifted out, or removed at any time or for any purpose, and as readily replaced again. Upon this bar D, is hung by the rungs CZ, ya rubibing board E, which is constructed as follows: F is a center piece or hub, to which is attached a series of radlal sections G-each of which is so formed, as to leave radial that the collars or wristbands of shirts, or y the most soiled portions of the garments to be washed, may be drawn or protruded through said slots, while the main body of the garment can lie upon the top of the rubber board, and thus only, the most soiled portions be most washed, without needlessly wearing out the whole garment, to cleanse one soiled portion thereof. The body of the garment, or the clothes generally that are to be washed may be placed under the rubber E, either before or after the most soiled portions are washed.

The under side of the rubbing board, and the bottom of the tub may be both furnished with radial ribs-so as to produce a good rubbing or washing surface between them.

Having thus fully described `the nature of our invention, we would state that, we are aware, devices for washing one portion of a garment more than another portion, have been used. This we do not claim independent of our special means of accomplishing JOSIAH MUMFORD. JOHN W. WILSON.
