Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
JOHN D. COCHRAN, OF MILFORD, NEWI HAMPSHIRE.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification ofiLetters Patent No. 32,411, dated May 28, 1861.
To all whom 'it may concern: l Be it known that I, J oHND. COCHRAN, of Milford, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings', forming part of this specification, and in which* Figure 1 represents a plan or top view, and F ig. 2 a section on line m-f, of Fig. 1. To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings A, represents the box into which the articles to be washed are placed and which is supported on legs B, one at each corner. Vithin the box is sup ported a frame C, composed of end pieces D, D, Aand top and bottom pieces E, E. Frame C, supports two rolls F, F, covered with rubber. The shaft of roll F, projects through one side of the box and is provided with balance wheel G, and crank pin or handle H, by which to operate the machine, while the other end has its bearing in the other side of box A. l To wash the clothes, they are run back and forthl between rolls F, F, which, being yielding, squeeze the articles, and force the suds through the same, and thusby a few times passing the clothes through the rolls, they are well washed, when by depressing rod o., stop piece o, is forced down; and by Stop piece is held up by alspring', under l it, as indicated in the drawing, the rear part being kept down by hinges or screws passing loosely through it as seen at o, o. The journal of roll F, might be set in adjustable spring bearings if found desirable, but by making the rubber covering of the rolls quite thick, there will be sufficient elasticity for ordinary purposes.
It will be seen that the axis of roll F, is the axis upon which the frame C, revolves.
Having described my improved washing machine, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y The combination of frame C, with its elastic rolls F, F, with stop b, rod a, and washing box A, the parts being constructed and arranged to operate in relation to each other as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
JOHN D. COCHRAN. In presence of PARIS H. HILL, A. W. SAWYER.
