Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENTOFFICE.
L. A. DOLE, 0F SALEM, OHIO.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 26,572, dated December 27, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L. A. DOLE, of Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full,
clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying draws ings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a vertical transverse section of a washing machine with my improvements. Fig. 2, is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3, a plan of the same.
Similar letters of reference, in eachof the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination ofthe slotted arms of the rubbing board with the hinged inclined sus pending links of the ivoted lever frame, whereby as the lever ame is moved forward, the rubber is caused first to move downward in the path of a vertical circle until it is resisted by contact with the clothes and the stationary vertical board, andmthen by reason of a continuance of the pressure in the same direction, caused to rise perpendicularly and thus subject the clothes to a rubbing action similar to that performed by the hand on a wash board, substantially as hereinafter described.
To enable others, skilled in the art, to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, represents a washtub with its backside vertical, its bottom curved and its front side inclined as represented in the drawing.
B, is a stationary vertically set luted Wash board. C, is a moving uted washing board; its arms a, a, areslotted as at This board is hung oni pivots c, c, which pass l loosely through the slots and to its lower end 1j 1 a lever frame D,` is attached;` said frame being suspended `on inclined hinged links E, n i t s i E, as shown.
From the above description of parts, it? 1; will be evident thatfif `.the rubber is moved 1` from the position shownin blue to thezposil; tion shown in black, it will? press the clothes` squarely up against thel `stationary wash board, and if the pressure on the level' is continued, the inclined linksilwillqhaveja .l tendency to cause the rubber to rise, theslots"1 1 allowing it to do so. `Thistendency of the" links to throw the rubber upward and pro-i duce a forward pressureas the downward t p i. pressure comes upon the lever frame, results ,I
from the links being hung outof aperpen?` dicular, and they consequently alwaysseek-Q` ing to assume a vertical position, which tendency being resisted by thecontact of the; rubber with the clothes, they in turn actas i levers to increase the power and aid in pros Q ducing an upward rubbing action. t.
What I claim as my inventionand `desire to secure by Letters Patents is-e The arrangement consistmgof the tub LA, rubber B, hinged rubber C, slotted arms 0,96; g
lover frame D, and `l1iiiged"finclined links E, E, in the `manner andfor the purpose herein' described. t i i The above specification of lmy n washing machines signed by me "thigiifhird day of N0ve1nber,;lr859.v'g
