WASHING-MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,556, dated November 11, 1890.

Application filed April 14, 1890. Serial No. 347,897. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LEON W. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Bed Washing- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The special object of the invention is to make a roller-bed washing-machine in which the cylinder which carries the clothes around through the soapsuds and against the rollerbed may be lifted out of and put into the soap-- sud receptacle without removing its journals from their bearings; also, to conveniently secure the garments to the cylinder.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view with one of the garment-fasteners thrown up and the tub broken away to show the rollerbed. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section.

In the drawings, A represents the wash-tub or receptacle for the soapsuds, provided with four legs a, the two opposite open slots a a, and the roller-bed a 13 is my cylinder, which consists of the two parallel disks b 1), beyond which the cylinder extends at B B, the shaft 1) and the slats or other material forming the periphery. In the outer surface of the cylinder and flush therewith I introduce at intervals the longitudinal clamps O, which are hinged at one end and provided at the other wit-h a subjacent turnbutton D. This clamp bears upon one edge of a garment, and each one may hold a sepa rate piece of clothing, so that several will be simultaneously rotated in the soapsuds and against the roller-bed.

E E are boards provided with bearings d, and hinged at 01, so as to make the bearings register with the slots a a in the wash-tub whenever the boards are brought into a horizontal position. In order to hold the bearings down I connect the free ends of the board with a spring F by means of a small wire rope or equivalent device. The wire rope G is made with a loop g in the end, and this loop is sprung over the end of spring E into the two opposite notches f f. By pressing the loop 9 out at the sides it may be quickly slipped off the spring, which is below the arm E.

Then it is desired to lift out the cylinder from the tub, the boards E E are swung back with the cylinder. The cylinder is brought back into the tub in the same manner.

The cylinder B, consisting of two parallel disks and slats fastened side by side to the peripheries thereof and projecting beyond said disks, some of said slats being pivoted at one end between two adjacent slats and provided under the other end with turn-buttons, whereby the buttons will come under the projecting ends of the fixed slats, where they can be easily turned across and under the two adjoining slats, substantially as shown and described.
