B. A. FISHER. WASHING MACHINE.
No; 604,032. Patented May 17, 1898.
BEVLY ALLEN FISHER, OF HAMILTON, MONTANA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,032, dated May 17, 1898.
Application filed May 25, 1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BEVLY ALLEN FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-Iamilton, in the county of Ravalli and State of Montana, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to washing-machines; and the object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character by means of which soiled clothing may be boiled without danger of burning them and cooking in the fibers thereof the foreign matter.
With this object in View the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved boiler, showing several articles of wearing-apparel clamped to the rotary shaft. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal sectional view with the cover in place, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the shaft removed.
In said drawings, 1 denotes the body of the suds-chamber, the sides of which are inclined and are formed with bearings 2.
3 denotes a rotary shaft having an axle 4:, to which it is secured. One end of this axle is provided with a crank 5, having a handle 6, and the other end of the axle is provided with a knob 7. The shaft is preferably form ed at its ends with disks 8, and secured to the periphery of the shaft is a series of clothesholders 9,which preferably consist of springwire bent to form oblong loops extending in opposite directions parallel with the shaft, there being two series of loops at each end of the shaft, the loops of one series extending beyond the loops of the other series. These loops are held to the shaft by the staples 11.
12 denotes the cover of the boiler. In use the clothes to be boiled are clamped to the drum and the drum placed Within the Serial No. 638,114. (No model.)
body of the boiler. Now by rotating the shaft the clothes will be wound about the same, and the tendency is to squeeze from the clothes all foreign matter. A reverse rotation of the shaft will unwind the clothes and splash them through the water, and a continued reverse rotation will again wind them upon the shaft. This operation is continued until the clothes are thoroughly cleansed, when. the shaft may be lifted from the boiler by the crank and handle and placed in a rinsing-tub.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a further explanation.
The device is exceedingly simple, and by its employmentall danger of burning the hands is entirely obviated.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changesor modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is.
An improved washboiler comprising asuitable receptacle to contain the suds, in combination with the rotary shaft 3 removably j ournaled in said receptacle and provided with the parallel end disks 8, 8,and having a clothesholder thereon made of a single piece of springwire bent to form .two series of loops, at each end of the shaft, extending parallel with and fixed to the shaft, the loops of one series extending beyond the loops of the other series, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BEVLY ALLEN FISHER.
