UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREEMAN F. REYNOLDS, OF VILLA RICA, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification fln'ining part of Letters Patent No. 208,990, dated October 15, 1878; application filed May 11, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FREEMAN F. REYNOLDS, of Villa Rica, in the county of Carroll and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line a- .90, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved washing-machine, whichshall be so constructed as to wash the clothes quickly and thoroughly, and without injuring them, and which at the same time shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
A is the lower part or boiler of the machine, which may be made of any desired or convenient size to adapt it to be placed upon a stove, range, or furnace, as may be desired or convenient, and which is provided near its bottom with the faucet B, for convenience in drawing off the suds, when desired. The boiler A may also be provided with a gagecock, 0, for regulatingv the depth of water within said boiler. In the upper edge of the end bars or rim of the boiler A are formed notches to receive thejournals of the shaft D, to which, near the ends of the boiler A, are attached two disks, E. To the outer edges of the disks E is attached a shell, F. A portion of the shell F is out out, and is replaced by a plate or door, G, of a little larger size than the opening thus formed. The plate G is hinged at one edge to the shell F, and is secured at its other edge by spring-catches or other convenient fastenings. To the inner surfaceof-the shell F are attached ribs H, which are rounded olf or made U-shaped on their outer sides, and which, as the washingcylinder is revolved, rub against the clothes and turn them, so that all parts may be properly operated upon. The shaft D, between the disks E, has longitudinal grooves I formed in it, or longitudinally-grooved bars I attached to it, to assist in turning and rubbing the clothes. The disks E, the shell F, and the door G are perforated, to allow the water to pass in and out freely.
The boiler A is provided with a closely-fittingsemi-cylindrical cover, J, to shut in the steam while the machine is being used, and which has afuunel, secured in an opening in its top, for convenience in pouring in water, when required.
In using the machine the cover A is removed, the cylinder E F G is opened, the clothes are placed within it, the cover J is replaced, and the boiler A is placed upon a stove, range, or furnace to be heated. A sufficient quantity of water and soap are then put in, and the washingcylinder is revolved by means of a crank, L, attached to one end of the shaft D. The clothes are thus kept in motion while being boiled, so that by their motion through the water, and by the friction of the ribs and inner surface of the washingcylinder, the dirt may be removed from them quickly. When the clothes have been sufiiciently washed, the dirty suds is drawn off and replaced by fresh or rinsing water, which operation may be repeated any desired number of times. The clothes may then be removed and wrung out for drying.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The washing-machine herein described, consisting of the sheet-metal vessel A, cover J, funnel K, perforated cylinder E F G, longitudinally-grooved shaft D I, and ribs H, the cylinder being supported upon the shaft D in the ends of the vessel A, and adapted to be revolved by means of a crank, L, all arranged and operating as and for the purpose specified.
