-Be it known that I, MARcARE'rlVLHoRNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of. Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -Washing-l\iachines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to washing machines, particularly to' thatclass having a drum which contains the clothes and which is'rotated by a crank or the like for the purpose of washing the clothes;

The object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the kind, as will more 'fully'appear from the following description and claims. i

In the manufacture of the drum, the sides may be conveniently formed of corrugated sheet metal provided with the perforations described, and screwed to the ends, the edges of which arescalloped. to produce the flutings described. To provide access to the drum a section thereof, as indicated at 14, is' attached to segmental end pieces 15 which are located outside the mam ends of the drum and are of such size that the part 14 may be swung around over'the outside of the drum/to open the same and to allow access thereto. The

sides are strengthened by flanges 16 projectinginwardly and formed by bending in the edges of the metal, these flanges assisting in agitating the-clothes as the drum is rotated.

The drum is mounted upon an axle 17 whichv extends through openings in the end of the cylinder, and is provided at one end with a crank handle 18 whereby it may be turned. In-.use, the cover 8 is removed and the cover 14 swung back and the clothes placed within the inner drum, and the cover is then replaced. The drum is then rotated by the crank, causing the clothes tohe moved about within the drum and to fall from one side to the, other thereof and so be cleaned. The
