Description

No. 889,283. PATENTED JUNE 2, 1903v M. EORNE. WASHING MACHINE.
APPLIOATION FILED SEPT.27.190.7.
Snueulfoz sition.
MARGARET M. HORNE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN;
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
' Patented June 2, 1908.
Application filed September 27, 1907. SerialNo. 394,915.
To all whom it may concern: 1
-Be it known that I, MARcARE'rlVLHoRNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of. Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -Washing-l\iachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to washing machines, particularly to' thatclass having a drum which contains the clothes and which is'rotated by a crank or the like for the purpose of washing the clothes;
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the kind, as will more 'fully'appear from the following description and claims. i
The invention is illustrated intheaccom-v panying drawings in'which,
. Figure 1 is a top plan view of the machine.
Fig. 2 1s a section-0n the line 22 of Fig. *1. Fig. 3 is a pers ective view of the drum which contains the c othes. I 1 1 Referring s ecifically to the drawings, 6 a tub, which may be an ordinary wash tub or a'tub specially made lot the purpose. Supported withinthis i's an outer cylindrical casing 7 provided with a cover 8 which may be removed. Bars 9 are attached -to the sides of the'cylinder and rest onthe rim of the tub, t0 support the c *linder in po- The bottom of the cylinder is perforated, as indicated at 10, andmaybe conve'niently made of sheet metal, ,the perforations belng large enough to allow a free flow of water from the tub into the cylinder. Located within the cylinder is a rotary drum 11-, which is conveniently made of sheet metal, the sidesthereof being fluted, as
indicated at 12 and also corrugated, as indi' cated at 13. The corruga-tedsides are also provided with a large number of fine holes, as shown. In the manufacture of the drum, the sides may be conveniently formed of corrugated sheet metal provided with the perforations described, and screwed to the ends, the edges of which arescalloped. to produce the flutings described. The purpose of this construction is to form a drum which is rougl or uneven on the inside, so as to agi- -.which" assists in the operation.
tate the clothes which are placed therein.
To provide access to the drum a section thereof, as indicated at 14, is' attached to segmental end pieces 15 which are located outside the mam ends of the drum and are of such size that the part 14 may be swung around over'the outside of the drum/to open the same and to allow access thereto. The
sides are strengthened by flanges 16 projectinginwardly and formed by bending in the edges of the metal, these flanges assisting in agitating the-clothes as the drum is rotated.
The drum is mounted upon an axle 17 whichv extends through openings in the end of the cylinder, and is provided at one end with a crank handle 18 whereby it may be turned. In-.use, the cover 8 is removed and the cover 14 swung back and the clothes placed within the inner drum, and the cover is then replaced. The drum is then rotated by the crank, causing the clothes tohe moved about within the drum and to fall from one side to the, other thereof and so be cleaned. The
water in the tub has access through the holes in, the cylinder and the drum. The corrugations of the drum, as the same is revolved,
have a rubbing action or eifect on the clothes, The outer cylinder creasing 7, with its. cover 8, serves to prevent splashing of water which would otherwise be caused by the rotation of the fluted drum.
I claim: g In. awashing machine, in combination, a tub, a stationary perforated cylinder suspended. within the tub and having cross pieces secured to its ends and resting on the rim of the tub, the cylinder having a removable cover, and bearing openings lIlthB ends, a rotary perforated drum within the-cylinder, having a door through which clothes;
may be inserted and removed and also having an axle resting in said openings, one end of the axle being provided with means to turn the same. i
In testimony whereof I afiix mysignature,
in presence of two witnesses.
MARGARET M. HORNE.
