Description

JUNIUS S. BALSLY.
Improvement in Washing Machines. N0 ..1 25,430-. PatentedA rilman.
" FIGIT' WiTNESSE'S JUNIUS S. BALSLY, OF HEBRON, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT lN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,430, dated April 9, 1872.
Specification describing anlmproved Washing-Machine, invented by J UNIUS S. BALSLY,
of Hebron, Boone county, Kentucky This invention consists in a combination of standards that spring from opposite sides of a wash-tub, and have slotted chambers forthe insertion of springs, plugs to hold the springs in place, and slots to receive the journals of a l rock-shaft, on which said springs act, with said rock-shaft, a pair of arms that extend downward from the same, and a ribbed roller whose journals extend into said arms.
Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section; and Fig. 2 a section through one of the standards.
A is the tub, to each of whose sides are secured two legs, a, which incline toward each other from the bottom upward, and at their tops support standards I), which have vertical slots 0 opening at each side out of chambers in the standards. These slots the journals of the rock-shaft d enter, from which rock-shaft extend downward parallel arms, 0, that receive, near their lower ends, the journals of the ribbed roller f, which is placed between the arms e, and rests, when the tub is empty, on the concave and slotted wash-board g that is supported 011 ledges h, which are secured to the inside of the hub, and leave space for Water beneath the wash-board.
The cleansing of fabrics in this machine is effected in the usual manner by placing them on the wash-board and causing the roller to ply back and forth over them, while immersed in water, by means of the handle (1 of the.
rock-shaft d. When the roller is near either end of the wash-board, the rock-shaft d is lower in the standards than when the roller is in the middle. Springs t are placed within the chambers in the standards, and bear upon the journals of the rock-shaft, so as to cause the roller to press the fabrics whatever be the position of the rock-shaft. Plugs j are inserted in the tops of the standards b in order to close the chambers, admit of the ready introduction and removal of the springs, and form bearings for the tops of the latter, said plugs being kept in place by pins or other suitable means.
I claim as my invention- The chambered and slotted standards I), plugs j, springs i, rock-shaft (1, arms 6, and rollers f, all combined and arranged as specified.
