Description
UNTTED sTATns PATENT onirica.
LEWIS TUPPER, OF GENOA, NEW YORK.
WASHING-MACHINE.
To all whom t may concern Be itl known that I, Lnwis TUPPER, of the town of Genoa, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for 'Tashing Clothes, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a. perspective view of the machine, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the machine.
The nature of my invention and improvement consists in making the rollers C of the dasher of greater diameter than the rollers B of the bed for the purpose of reducing friction and preventing the danger of having the clothes injured by passing said rollers back and forth over them, the said rollers being prevented, by reason of their superior diameter from descending into the spaces between the small rollers of the concave wash bed and tearing small and fine clothing when in said spaces during the o-peration of washing.
A represents the wash boX made in the usual manner.
B is the concave bed of revolving rollers turning on pivots, or gudge-ons, in a frame L, placed in the bottom of the boX.
C are `the swinging or dash rollers made of greater diameter than the rollers B of the concave.
D is the swinging or dash frame in which the rollers C revolve.
Eis the rock shaft to which the arms of I the dash frame are atlixed.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 5,491, dated March 28, 1848.
I-I are the uprights secured to the wash box in the usual manner, and on which the rock shaft turns.
I are spiral springs that allow the rock shaft to rise and fall during its reciprocating movement over the bed of rollers, and to rise when a quantity of clothes are introduced between the dasher and the bed.
K is a plug for letting off the dirty water after the washing is finished.
All the rollers are made to turn on their own axis.
I do not claim as my invention making a machine to wash clothes by means of a concave bed of rollers and a vibrat-ory frame of rollers to move back and forth over the same, as this has been done, but
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is* Making the rollers B of the .concave wash board or bed, and vibrat-ing dasher C, of different sizes for the purpose of reducing friction and preventing the danger of having the clothes injured by passing said rollers back and forth over them, the said rollers being prevented (by reason of their greater diameter) from descending into the spaces between the small rollers of the concave wash bed and tearing small and kfine clothing when confined in said spaces during the operation of washing as herein set forth, the large and small rollers of the dasher and concave vrevolving on their axes as the frame swings to and fro over the bed of rollers.
Lnwis TUPPER.
