WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,527, dated August 6, 1889.
' Application filed May 11, 1888. Serial No. 273,560- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known-that 1, PETER W. RoDEcKER, of Sidney, in the county of Shelby and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vashing-Wlachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved washing-machine in position in a tub, the latter being in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 1s a vertical cross-section of the same. Figs.
4 and 5 are details.
This invention is an improved washing-machine; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly specified in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates an ordinary tub.
'B B are the end pieces or uprights of the machine-frame, which pieces are widened at bottom and connected to cross-pieces b b,which are of proper length to fit properly in the tub.
C O are lugs secured to the inside of the tub in position to engage with one of the crosspieces I), and cis a turn-button secured to the tub-bottom and adapted to engage the other cross-piece b and secure the machine in the tub.
The upper ends .of uprights B B are connected by a bar D, which has a central vertical opening through which plays a pin d,which has a series of annular serrations in it, as shown.
E is a catch-block playing through a lateral opening in bar D and engaging pin (Z in one of the serrations thereof, whereby said pin is locked. v
e is a horizontal'lever pivotally connected to block Eand supported upon a spring-tempered rod e, which both supports the lever and causes itto return to its normal posit-ion after displacement, as indicated in Fig. 4.
F is a movable bar below bar D, having tenons on its ends which engage in slots ff on the inner faces of uprights B B and guide the bar F in its vertical movements.
G is a barplaced below bar F and having tenons g g on its ends, which play in the upper ends of vertical slots H H in uprights B B, vertically below slots f and bars D and F. The upper face of bar G is provided with a metal facing h, against which bear the ends of semicircular springs I I, which are secured to the bar F, near the opposite ends thereof.
J J are blocks playing in slots H H and retained therein by clips 1' t' on uprights B, as shown. The tenons g of bar G bear upon the upper ends of the blocks J J. In the lower ends of said blocks are formed proper bearings for the shaft of the scrubbing-drum K. This drum is composed of the end disks L L and grooved staves Z. The disks are keyed on shafts it between uprights B B and are convexed on their outer faces, as shown, to permit the drum to be partially oscillated without binding against the uprights, and the grooved staves Z Z are secured to the peripheries of said disks about one-eighth of an inch apart, so as to permit free access of the water to the interior of the drum.
M M designate rollers, preferably five in number and of small diameter and arranged in close proximity to each other below and 011 lines concentric to the drum. Each roller is provided with a stud at the end, which enter proper openings in the uprights B B and j ournal the rollers thereon.
N is an endless apron surrounding rollers M, as shown. The lower ends of the uprights B B are braced by proper cross-pieces m, as shown. The tub A is slotted at a, for the accommodation of the shaft is, which projects beyond the tub and is provided with a crank handle it.
In operation the machine is placed in the tub and secured therein, as shown. Pin d is then depressed, depressing bar F, and the latter bar, through springs I and connections, depresses bar G and causes the drum K to bear with yielding pressure on rollers M M through the apron N. The tub being filled with water above the rollers, the drum is rotated and the articles to be washed are placed on the traveling apron, carried between drum K and rollers M, and thoroughly scrubbed thereby. As the suds can escape through the interstices between the slats 1 into the drum, splashing is prevented. The apron N prevents small articles from becoming entangled among the rollers and torn, and also protects them from the injurious wear caused by direct contact of the scrubbing-surfaces, permitting the most delicate fabrics to be passed through the machine without injury. The arrangement of rollers M presents a large amount of scrubbing-surface to the material, being about seven inches in a full-sized machine.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the slotted uprights, the journal-blocks moving in the slots thereof, and the drum journaled therein with the bar G, resting on said blocks, the springs I I on said bar, the bar F, resting 011 springs I I, the serrated pin (Z, catch-block E, lever 6,
and spring-rod e, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A Washing-machine consisting of the uprights B B, vertically slotted at H H, the blocks J, moving in said slots, the drum K, constructed substantially as described, mounted on a shaft journaled in blocks J, the series of rollers M, concentric to and below the drum, the apron N ihereon, the horizontal bar G, springs I I, bar F, and serrated pin d, catchblock E, lever e, and spring-rod 6', all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
