SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,666, dated January 5, 1886.

Application filed April 13, 1885.

.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THEODORE PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of \Vhiting, in the county of Monona and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VVashing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of washing-machines that have concave wash-board surfaces, upon which clothing is placed and pressed and rubbed by means of an oscillating adjustable and removable convex rubber; and my object is to avoidthe necessity of lifting or adj Listing the rubber in putting clothing in a tub, or taking them out; and I accomplish this by forming and combining an open-bot tomed rubbing device with a tub, as hereinafter set forth, in such a manner that articles to be washed can be dropped into the rubber to be beat and carried and turned therein, and also rubbed upon the concave wash-board surface in the tub, to be thoroughly cleansed while submerged in the water in the tub. and then taken out of the machine without lifting or adjusting the rubber.

Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a perspective view of my rubbing device, and Fig. 2 a vertical and longitudinal section of the complete machine.

A represents a box-form tub such as are in common use. It has fixed legs to support itin an elevated position, and a concave washboard surface, B, composed of wooden slats fixed to the sides of the tub in such a manner that they will not come in contact with the sheet-metal bottom of the tub.

In the practical use of my rubber thus constructed and applied I simply place hot soapsuds in the tub, and then place the articles to be washed within the open-bottomed rubber, and take hold of the handle and vibrate it. The clothing will be thereby pushed back and forth and rubbed overthe concave wash-board, and pressed and beaten and turned by the cross pieces and bars in the ends ofthe rubber, which allow the water to pass, but restrict the articles from passing outside of the rubber.

I am aware that a reciprocating rubber has been composed of solid sides and a series of crosspieces, and suspended in atub in amanner similar to mine; but in no instance has a rubber been formed with an open bottom through which articles of clothing could be placed upon the wash board underneath, rubbed and pressed by the action of the rubber, and then removed from the machine without lifting the rubber, as contemplated 'by my invention.

I claim as my invention 1. An open-bottomed rubbing device for washing-machines, composed of parallel sides 0, ends D, cross-bars f, and arms substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination of a rubbing device having solid sides, connected at their ends by means of cross-pieces, an open bottom, and rigid arms extending vertically from the centers of the sides, in combination with a washingmachine tub having a concave wash-board surface, to operate in the manner set forth, for the purposes specified.
