Description

IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specication'forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,596, dated January 9, 1872.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, D. W. GEORGE, of Pulaski, in the county of Davis and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful forth.
' In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the anneXed drawing, in which- Figure lis a side elevation, part in longitudinal vertical section,of my machine, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the grooved castings in which the rubber is supported.
A represents the tub, made of any suitable dimensions, and provided with a concave bottom in semicircular form. On this bottom is laid andv secured a corrugated tin or zinc washboard, B, which thus forms a semicircle, as shown inl Fig. 1.` Above each end of the washboard B is placed an inward-projecting board or ledge, G. The clothes are placed on the board B and washed by being rubbed back and forth by the rubber, which consists of two semicircular heads, E E, connected by means of -slats or bars D D inserted in the outer edges ofthe heads, and a suitable distance apart so as to allow the water to pass between them. The slats or bars D D project beyond the edges of the heads, and their outer edges are beveled inward toward the center of the rubber, which is of great benefit `in drawing the clothes back and forth on the wash-board. In the center of the heads E E, on the outer sides, are points or pivots c c, which are placed in vertical grooves or castings G which are attached to the sides of the tub or box A, said castings thus supporting the rubber and allowing it to give upward according to the amount of clothes to be washed. Across the ends on top of the rubber are secured metal plates .H H, which, in combination with the end boards C C, prevent the splashing of the water. Across the top, in the center of the rubber, and also further down, is a cross-bar, I, through which the handle J is passed, as shown. In one side of the tub A is a hole, af, for drawing olf the water. In this hole is inserted a bushing, b, with a plug in the same. rlhis bushing prevents the wearing of the hole.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the box A, semicircular corrugated washboard B, end boards O O, rubber D E, plates H H, castings G G, handle J, and bushing b in the hole c', all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of November, 1871.
D. W. GEORGE.
