PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB SCHAFFER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HANDLE FOR WASH BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 1906.
Application filed August 11, 1905. Serial No. 273,776-
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it-known that I, JAooB SOHAFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Handles for Washboilers, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to what may be called a double handle for utensils or articles such as washboilers, ash-cans, &c. The handles can be mounted by a common support or fastening, so as to be rapidly and cheaply attached.
This invention is set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view, partly in section, of the Washboiler. Fig. 2 is a vertical section along line so a; of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the boiler. Fig. 4.- shows a modification. Fig. 5 shows another modification.
This washboiler is provided with a double set of handles. Each of the additional handles is adapted to be actuated to swing upward to be readily grasped or to swing downward when not in use to be out of the way.
In the drawings the letter a designates a washboiler, to which are fastened the side pieces or ears b. Each of these side pieces is provided with a series of beads or ribs 0 to give proper strength and prevent fracture. Between each set of the side pieces is fastened a cross piece or pin (1, having loosely or rotatively mounted thereon a handle e. An additional handle f is also mounted to swing between each set of the side pieces. This handlef, when in the position shown in Fig. 3, can be readily grasped to lift the washboiler, thus supplying the said boiler with an additional handle which can be used when the other handle is broken or can be used in conjunction therewith, as shown. The handle f is shown within the boundaries of the side pieces. The swinging handle could, however, be otherwise mounted, as in Fig. 4, where handle f extends or swings outside of the side pieces.
The rivets g secure the side pieces in place,
and both handles are secured by the said rivets or fastenings. In Fig. 5 the rivets secure the side pieces as also bearing pieces or loops h, in which the handle f swings or hinges.
To secure proper strength of side pieces evenwhen made of scrap or so-called waste, each side piece is made of a double layer or thickness. In constructing the side pieces a practical way is to double a piece of sheet metal or to lay one piece of sheet metal on top of another. This double thickness is then died out and the edges being bent or beaded the two layers are secured together or become practically one. A cheap and strong side piece is thus secured.
If desired, the swinging handle can be left bare or provided with a sleeve, as shown at e.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A handle comprising side pieces, a hand part fixed in said side pieces and a second hand member movably mounted to swing in said side pieces, and connected to the latter at intermediate points. i
2. A handle comprising side pieces, a cross piece or pin at the free end parts of the side pieces, a hand part seated about the crosspiece and a second hand member swinging in the side pieces, and connected to the latter at intermediate points.
3. A handle comprising side pieces and bearingpieces, rivets to secure the side and bearing pieces in common, a hand part fixed to the side pieces and a second hand member hinged in the bearing-pieces.
4:. A handle for washboilers or the like, consisting of side pieces, ahand part rotatably mounted in the ends thereof, and a second hand member swingingly mounted between the hand part and the article to which the side pieces are to be secured.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing v witnesses.
JACOB SCHAFFER.
Witnesses EDWARD WIEsNER, GEORGE HULSBERG.
