Description

Patented May 21,1918.
lbw imam ATTORNEY INVENTOR ll jl rrnn erm ne ISAAC LINDBERG, 0F BOWBELLS, NORTH DAKOTA.
GRAIN-SCOOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented nay er, rors.
Application filed April 12, 1917. Serial No, 161,596.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC LINDBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowbells, in the county of Burke and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Scoops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a scoop for handling grain and the like and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature, with means whereby the same can be easily emptied.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the handle used for tilting the scoop to empty the same can be adjusted as to its position on the scoop.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple and eflicient means for repairing the front of the scoop when the same becomes worn.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for reinforcing the scoop on its sides Where the carrying handle at the same time providing stops for limiting the movement of the handle and providing journals for the said handle.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the scoop.
Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is an end view.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a detail.
In these drawings, the body of the scoop is shown at 1 and the carrying handle at 2. On each side of the body of the scoop I provide a reinforcing piece 3 having a straight edge in front, as indicated at 4 and an upwardly inclined edge in the rear, as indicated at 5. I prefer to rivet this piece to the side of the scoop by means of the three rivets 6, 7 and 8. These rivets are of sulficient length for the rivet 7 to form a journal for the handle 2 and the rivets 6 and 8 to form stops to limit the movement of the handle.
To the back of the scoop I secure two is connected with the scoop and angle irons 9, each having one member secured to the scoop and its other projecting outwardly. To each projecting member of the angle irons 9 I rivet a substantially triangular piece 10, said pieces 10 being riveted to the lower end of the pieces 9 by means of the rivets 11, said rivets acting as a hinge for the pieces 10. The pieces 10 are connected together by a rod 12 forming a tilting handle for the scoop, and said pieces 10 are provided at the upper edges with openings 13, corresponding to similar openings in the pieces 9, so that the pieces 10 may be held against movement by inserting a rod 14. through said openings 13 into the openings in the pieces 9, as shown in Fig. 3.
WVhen the front edge of the scoop wears out, I may repair the same by means of the piece of metal 15, bent on itself as shown in Fig. 4 to engage each side of the bottom of the scoop and provided with holes 16 through which rivets are to be passed to rivet the repair piece to the scoop.
It will be seen that by my invention, a scoop of strong yet simple construction is provided and that the reinforcing side pieces are made to perform a double function. Also, by the construction of the tilting handle, said handle may be used in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 whereby the scoop may be tilted in an easier manner than heretofore, or said handle may be made stationary by means of the rod 141- so the scoop can be used in the ordinary manner.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A scoop comprising a body part, a handle connected therewith, a tilting handle consisting of two triangular pieces, a rod connecting the two together, means for hinging the lower edge of each triangular piece to the body and a removable rod for connecting the upper part of the triangular pieces to the scoop.
2. A scoop comprising a body part, a handle connected therewith, a pair of angle irons secured to the rear wall of the body part, a tilting handle consisting of a pair of plates pivoted to said angle irons, a rod In testimony whereof I affix my signature connecting said plates together, said angle in presence of two Witnesses.
irons and plates being provided With alined ISAAC LINDBERG openings, and a removable rod adapted to pass through said openings for normally retaining the tilting handle in rigid connection to the scoop.
