\X/ITNESEEE:
(Nb Model.) I v v I J. B. MILLER.
SH'AGKLE FOR VESSELS GRAINS.
No. 550,417. Pat'nte'd 1501 .25, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES BOYD MILLER, OF RO OKLAND, MAINE.
SHACKLE FOR VESSELS CHAINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,417, dated November 26, .1895.
Application filedIebruary' 20, 1896. Serial No. 539,039. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES BOYD. MILLER, of Rockland, in the county of Knox and State of Maine, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Shackles for Vessels Chains, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to an improvement in.
shackles for vessels chains; and it consists in the novel features of construction and relative arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described in the specification, clearly illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying one sheet of drawings, in which like characters indicate like parts in all the figures wherever they occur.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a shackle embodying my improvements, a portion of one side thereof being shown in section. Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a top view of the shackle with sections of cable attached thereto. Fig. lrepresents a perspective view of the shackle.
' Ct a represent clevises provided at their open ends with eyes I] 1) adapted to receive a rod or pintle 0. Each clevis is provided with sockets d adapted to receive the rounded ends .6 e of the opposite clevis and to form a knuckle-joint, permitting the clevises to oscillate freely upon the pivot-pintle c, and presents a rounded surface free from angular projections to impede the free passage of the shackle through the hawsepipe.
A The clevises a a are secured together by the pivot-rod c, passing through the eyes bin the rounded ends or knuckles e e. A sleeve 40 f, surrounding the pivot-rod, is interposed between the ends of the clevis a and has a cotter or pin 9 passing therethrough and through the pivot-rod c, the arrangement being that the rod 0 is prevented from endwise movement by the sleeve while the cotter is in position, thus affording asecure fastening and adapted to be readily detached, as it is only necessary to remove the cotter and slip out the pivotrod c, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2. It. has also been the practice to secure the pivot-pin to one of the ears or rounded ends of the clevis by means of a pin passing therethrough, which construction is objectionable in that it weakens the clevis by, reason of the hole and increases the liability of fracture under a heavy strain.
By securing the pivot-pin in the manner herein shown I avoid weakening the clevis and place the cotter where it will not weaken the pivot-pin, as will be readily seen.
Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though without attempting to set forth all the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-== A shackle for vessels chains comprising in its construction two U -shaped clevises provided with eyes at their open ends and with sockets or recesses to receive the rounded portions of the open ends, a pintle or pivot pin extending through the eyes of the rounded ends, a sleeve surrounding said pintle or pivot pin between the ends of the clevises, and a cotter or pin passing through said sleeve and pintle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 15th day of February, A. D. 1895. g I, JAMES BOYD MILLER.
