Description

( Model.)
WRIGHT.
SHOVEL 0R. su No. 412,355.
Patented Oct. 8, 1889.
WIiDVESS UNITED STATES ATENI rricn.
CHARLES WESLEY WRIGHT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO RICHARD P. WVRIGHT, CF SAME PLACE.
SHOVEL OR SPADE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,355, dated October 8, 1889.
Application filed June 24,1889- Serial No. 315,392. (No model.)
To whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES WESLEY \VRIGHT, of Holmesburg, Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shovels or Spades; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specifi- IO cation.
My invention has relation to the method of securing the ban die-straps to the blade of the shovel or spade; and it consists in a shovel or spade blade having both the front and back I 5 handle-strap secured to the front of the blade,
as hereinafter particularly set forth and described.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout.
Figure 1 is a rear view of my improved shovel. Fig. 2 is a front View. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View on the line a: a" of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents the shovel-blade bent back as in the process of construction, as for the purpose of riveting and securing the handlestraps to the blade.
A is the blade of the shovel or spade.
H represents the rear or back handle-strap, and H the front handle-strap.
a is a flange consisting of a portion of the blade A bent forward and down against the front face of the blade, to which the back strap H and the front strap H are securely 3 5 riveted by the rivets l), as particularly shown in Fig. 3.
The blade A in the process of construction is out into the proper shape, and the flanges a cut or stamped in the upper central part of the blade, as shown in the center dotted lines in Fig. 1,rivet-holes being provided in the flanges a at the proper points. The flanges a and the blade A are then bent to about the position shown in Fig. 4. The back strap II and the front strap H are then placed in position on the flanges a, as shown, and riveted securely thereto, the inner heads of the rivets being on the under side of the flange or, between the flanges a, and the blade A. The blade A is then bent forward and given its proper shape, as shown particularly in cross section in Fig. 3. An additional rivet b is provided through the blade A and the front strap H, having its head countersunk in the back of the blade A to give additional strength.
The object of my invention is to provide a strong and durable handle-strap-fastening device, which at the same time can be more cheaply constructed than by the method usn- 6o ally employed of securing the strap-fasteners to the shovel-blade, and a further object is to provide a shovel or spade having an even and smooth rear surfaceto prevent friction in shoveling, While at the same time there is presented on the face of the blade no greater irregularity and unevenness than in the former method of construction. The heads of the rivets I) being between the flanges a and blade A are thus protected and cannot Wear off as in shovels Where they are exposed and constantly subject to friction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a shovel or spade, the flanges a, the back strap H, and the front strap H, secured together by riveting or otherwise, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as hereinbefore set forth and described. 8o
2. In a shovel or spade, a blade having flanges a bent forward and dovvn against the face of the blade, and having back and front handle-straps secured to the said flanges by riveting or otherwise, substantially as hereinbefore set forth and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of June, A. D. 1889.
