c. B. REYNOLDS.
IRONING BOARD.
APPLI 0ATION FILED 00121 Patented July 25, 1911.
COLUMBIA PLAHOORAFH 90-. WASHINGTON. II C.
UNITED STATES PATENT onrion.
CLARK B. REYNOLDS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IRONING-BOARD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK B. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention is concerned with a collapsible ironing board especially adapted for use in ironing garments, and is designed to produce a device of the class described which shall be extremely simple in its construction and inexpensive to manufacture, and yet which shall be sufliciently rigid in its operative position and readily collapsible into the smallest possible space.
To illustrate my invention, I annex hereto a sheet of drawings, in which the same reference characters are used to designate identical parts in all the figures, of which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the board in its operative position; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in its collapsed position; and Fig. 3 is a rear end view of the same in its operative position.
In carrying out my invention, I preferably employ a base board a and a top board Z), which are preferably both suitably shaped for use and are of different sizes, so that both of them may be utilized as the ironing board, although obviously the device is more especially adapted to have the smaller top board 5 used as the ironing board. To connect these two parallel boards, I employ a pair of parallel bails 0 and (Z, which are preferably made of heavy wire or metal rods bent into the generally rectangular shape shown, and pivotally secured to both boards by means of bearing straps e, and it will be noted that the ends of the bails are beneath the straps c on the bottom board, while the preferably unsevered central portions of the bails are beneath the straps e on the under side of the top board. To hold the bails in a perpendicular position relative to the boards, I extend the ends f of the bails c and turn them at right angles to the adjacent portions passing through the straps e and also to the vertical portions of the straps when the board is in its operative position, and if these ends are held down against the Specification of Letters Patent.

upper surface of the bottom board a it will be apparent that the two boards will be rigidly held in their operative position against any strain that can be applied in ordinary use. To hold these ends f down, I may employ any suitable catch mechanism, but I preferably employ for this purpose a bolt 9 which has its head countersunk in the outer side of the bottom board a and has its threaded body extending up between the ends f in the operative position of the board. Cooperating with this bolt 9 is a wing nut 71, which, when the boards are to be locked in their operative position, is merely turned so that the wings of the nut will extend over the ends f and hold them down. When the board is to be collapsed, a quarter turn of the nut releases the ends 7 and permits the board to be turned down into the position shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pair of parallel boards, of a pair of parallel bails pivotally connected to both of said boards, one of said bails having its ends extending atright angles to the body portion thereof, and lock-. ing means cooperating with said ends to hold the bail in a position perpendicular to said boards, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pair of parallel boards, of a pair of parallel bails pivotally connected to both of said boards, one of said bails having its ends extending at right angles to the body portion thereof, and looking means cooperating with said ends to hold the bail in a position perpendicular to said boards, said means consisting of a bolt projecting up from the board between said ends, and anut thereon adapted to be turned into engagement with said ends, substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and ailixed my seal, this 19th day of October, A. D. 1909.
