PATENT OFFICE.
BOILER-BRACE- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,466, dated February 16, 1904.
Application filed August 30, 1902.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn A. PnMnN'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Boiler-Brace, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to steam-boilers; and its object is to provide a new and improved boiler-brace, more especially designed for use between the shell and the head of a boiler and arranged to prevent the brace from arching or buckling upon subjecting the boiler to heavy pressure.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a boiler provided with the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the improvement.
The improved boiler-brace consists, essentially, of a shank A, terminating at one end in an attaching-plate B and at its other end in a flattened flange G. The shank A is centrally and integrally connected with the attachingplate B, and the connecting portion A of the shank is circular and gradually increases in size, so as to greatly strengthen the junction of the shank and plate. The latter is preferably circular, but may be triangular, octagonal, square, or of any other desired shape, and the plate is provided with a plurality of apertures D for rivets E, employed to fasten the attaching-plate to the head F of the boiler.
The flange C is provided with spaced apertures D for rivets E to secure the flange to Serial No. 121,697. (No model the shell F of the boiler, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. The flange C extends lengthwise of the brace, but at angles to the shank A, and
the attaching-plate B stands at angles to the shank in such a manner that the outer face of the attaching-plate is arranged in a plane at angles to the plane passing through the top face of the flange C.
By having the attaching-plate centrally connected with the shank A it is evident that a large number of holes D and rivets E may be employed for securing the attaching-plate to the head F, so that no,matter in which direction the strain comes on the brace the latter is prevented from ardhing or buckling, and con sequently the brace properly fulfils at all times its functions, and the boiler is rendered strong and safe.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A boiler-brace comprising a shank, an attaching-plate integrally and centrally connected with one end of the shank and standing at angles to the same, the said plate being formed with a plurality of holes to receive fastening devices, for attaching the plate to the boilerhead, and a flattened flange for engagement with the boiler-shell, integral with the other end of the shank, the flange standing at angles to the shank and the face of the flange lying in a plane approximately at right angles to the plane in which lies the outer face of the attaching-plate, the shank at its junction with the attaching-plate being circular and the connecting portion of the shank swelling in all directions toward the attaching-plate, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
JOSEPH A. PETKENT.
