Description
Np. 819,729. PATENTED MAY 8, 1906. J. B. (ELEVEN.
FENCE POST.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT.19, 1905.
I (7:5. a/erffl JOSEPH B. CLEVEN, OF LODI, WISCONSIN.
. FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1906.
Application filed September 19, 1905. Serial No. 279,201.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. CLEVEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lodi, in the county of Columbia and State of VVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fence-posts, the object being to provide a fence-post including a post proper and a base with a detachable connection therebetween to prevent accidental disengagement of the post proper from the base.
\Vith the above and other objects in View the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made.
within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the present invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is aview at right angles to Fig. 1 with boards secured in place.
Referring now more particularly to the accomp anying drawings, the reference character 1 designates a base formed of a single piece of metal or other suitable material having a bent portion 1, to which the lower end of the post 2 is secured in any suitable manner, it being observed that the post 2 has upper and lower perforations 3 and 4, respectively. These perforations are designed to receive the ends of a rod 5, which latter is provided for connection therewith of line-wires. (Not shown.) The upper end 6 of the rod 5 is directed at a right angle to the body portion of the rod with its extremity screw-threaded for engagement therewith of a nut 7. It will thus be understood that the upper end 6 of the rod 5 is fitted in the perforation 3 when the nut 7 is engaged therewith to secure the rod firmly at the upper end with its body portion in spaced relation to the post 2. The
lower end of the rod 5 is bent inwardly parallel with the portion 6, as indicated by the reference character 8, and then directed downwardly, as at 9. The downwardly-d1- rected part 9 of the rod 5 is designed to en gage the opposite face of the post 2, upon which the body portion of the rod is disposed, the downwardly directed portion 9 being beneath the perforation 4 and said body portion being thereabove with the horizontallydirected portion 8 arranged transversely of the post in said perforation 4. It will thus be seen that the rod 5, to which line-wires are connected, is fixedly secured at the upper end only, the peculiar formation of the lower end of the rod 5 obviating the employment of a nut at the lower end thereof. Of course the lower end is fitted in the perforation 4 before the insertion of the upper end in its perforation 3. I wish to state also that by reason of the spaced relation of the rod 5 with the post proper, 2, slats or panels may be secured therebetween and held firmly through the instrumentality of suitable fastenings 10, em-
bracing the rod 5 and piercing the slatsor panels. It is thought that this modification is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and it is thought that further description thereof is unnecessary.
What is claimed is A fence-post provided with upper and lower apertures, and a rod having its upper end bent at right angles to its main portion and engaged through said upper aperture, the extreme end of said rod being threaded to receive a nut, the lower end of said rod being bent at right angles to its main portlon and engaged through said lower aperture, the extreme ends of the last-named portion being bent downwardly at right angles to the said-portion and arranged to lie against the rear face of said post, the main portion of said rod being spaced throughout its entire length from the said post.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
