Description

A. B. HENDRYX.
- PAPER BOX.
No. 88,165. Patented Mar. 23, 1869.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. B. HENDBYX, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVED PAPER BOX.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 88,165, dated March 23, 1869.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, A. B. HENDRYX, of Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a 'full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a perspective view of the box, and in Fig. 2 a diagram illustrating the construction.
This invention relates to an improvementin paper boxes for various purposes, especially in that class of boxes which are made from a single piece of pasteboard, such as commonly have their angles cut away, theirfbur sides turned up, and a strip of paper pasted over the angle. It is well known that the angles thus formed are weak and easily broken.
The object of my invention is to form a stronger angle, and without the necessary enr ployment of the pasted strip upon the angle.
To this end myinvention consistsin cutting dovetails upon the several angles, so that the tails on the one side will turninto the recesses on the other. The edges of the dovetails bei n g glued, the whole is secured together in the most perfect manner.
To enable others to fully understand my invention, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A represents the bottom; B, the four sides, cut from a single piece of pasteboard. The
broken lines (6 represent the cuts where the four 'sides are turned up.
Heretofore the entire angle has been cut away, as at f f; then, when the sides were turned up, a strip of paper pasted over the an-- gle. To avoid this I cut, upon one end of the several sides, tails d, forming recesses e between the tails, so that when the sides are turned up, as in Fig. 1, the tails on one side are bent around and into the recesses on the other. These being'glued or pasted securely hold the angles, and form a stronger and more perfect box than the constructions as heretofore. The form of the tails and recesses is immaterial, so that the one corresponds to the other.
I do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming securing the angles of a box bydovetailing; and, further, I am aware of the patents of J. S. Hoard, May 23, 1865, and T. H.
Doolittle, September 12,1865, also of the pateut'of Edward Morris, September 12,18t'5', and do not claim anything described or shown in said patents.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, -is.-
A paper box in which the angles are secured by means of the tails d on one side turned into corresponding recesses on the other, substantially as set forth.
A. B. HENDRYX. Witnesses:
A. J. TIBBITs, J. H. SHUMWAY.
