CEDAR CHEST.:
Application filed June 26, 1914. Serial No. 847,367.
vided with depending flanges embracing the edges of the body, and in some instances with sealing strips secured to the top just inside of the body engaging portion. When the outside flange type of top has been employed, the flange has been made of considerable thickness and secured to the edge of the top in a manner to form a thick objectionable projecting part around the front and ends of the box, owing to the required thickness of material employed for properly uniting the upper edge of the strips to the under side of the top. When an inside sealing strip is employed, it has to be secured by its edge to the top, and is often easily broken off.
The objects of the present invention is to provide a cedar chest top with a depending outside edge flange and an inside or sealing flange and by uniting the flanges, securing a very strong and permanent structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a chest top with sealing and finishing strip united to add rigidity to the top, rendering it possible to employ sectional tops without the necessity of cross-bars or uniting cleats. 7
Among other objects may be mentioned that of improved appearance and the avoidance of the objections found in prior structures.
In the drawing is shown a preferred and ascertained advantageous structure embodying the invention, but it is to be understood that the structure may be modified in details without departing from the nature and principle of the invention.
Figure l is a cross section of the top showing the edges of the box body in dotted lines, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan, and Fig. 3 is a 196. spective view of the molding.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4 1915.
In the drawing, A designates the top, which may be formed of a single or a series of blanks or boards, B designates the box edges. The top is conveniently somewhat wider and longer than the body as shown, and is so positioned on the body that its rear edge is flush with the back, so that suitable hinges can be applied when desired.
0 designates the molding conveniently of L-shape in cross section. The attaching portion 0 of the molding is flat and is glued or nailed directly to the top A. From the inner edge of the part 0 extends a depending flange 0 conveniently integral with the attaching portion. The molding is secured at the edge portions of the top at both sides and ends, the front and end strips being set in slightly beyond the edges of the top. lhe back strip is secured with its outer edge flush with the edge of the top.
D designates the edge strips which are relatively thin and of a thiclmess to fit below the overhanging edges of the top. These strips are secured by glue or fastened along their upper edges to the outer edges of the molding C, as shown, and are thereby securely positioned without marring the top or the edge thereof. Owing to the capability of securing the relatively thin strips at their sides, as distinguished from edge securing, a very rigid and strong structure is provided.
The space between strips D and flanges 0 is just sufficient to accommodate the upper edges of the body or box, and thereby a sealing fit is acquired. By the employment of the particular type of molding, it is evident that by placing or removing parts, a
very accurate fit between the same and the box can be secured without destroying the finish of the cover or box edges. stock for the cover can also be employed than heretofore, while preserving the desired thickness at the edges.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
- A chest comprising a body part, a movable top thereon having an edge extending beyond the plane of the side of the body part, a molding having a horizontal portion and a depending inner edge flange portion, means for securing the molding to the top and passing through the said horizontal portion thereof, the outer edge o the ho i nt l p r- Thinner tion being positioned inwardly beyond the body and fastening means passing through edge of the top and a relatively thin strip the said strip into the horizontal portion of fitted in the space between the outer edge of the molding, substantially as described.
