Description

PATENTED DEC. 24, 1907. 0.B.REYNOLDS.
WAGON BOX.
APPLIUATION FILED JAN. 20, 1906.
' I TAkEssE v 5 d 0 WW ma IHVI 8 m. Pu U h 'OLIVER B. REYNOLDS, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS.
WAGON-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed January 20 1906. Serial No. 296,959-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER B. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Boxes, of which the following is a complete specification.
This invention relates to wagon boxes, and more particularly to the box trimmings, the object being to provide a wagon box in which the exposed edges shall be protected and strengthenedin a very simple and eflective manner, and to also prevent the box from warping and twisting. Wagon boxes heretofore manufactured, so far as known to applicant, were trimmed with strap iron, which did not materially strengthen the sides of the box or afford protection against water entering between the guard strip and box edge, and it is these objections which the present invention seeks to overcome.
Referring to the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the rear end of a wagon box or body, to which is attached my improvement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective, partly in section, of a portion of the wagon box shown in Fig. 1, de-
signed to illustrate the manner of securing the beaded channel in position, and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the attachment of a of the part shown in Fig. 5 but viewed edgewise. Fig. 7 represents an end elevation of a beaded channel bar provided with inwardly projecting tongues on the lower end of the flanges thereof. Fig. 8 is a corresponding view of a plain channel bar, and Fig. 9 represents an end view of a plain channel bar with the ends cut and folded together.
In the drawings, 1 designates the side I board ofa wagon box, 2 the bottom board,
and 2 a sheet metal plate secured to the upper surface of the bottom. To the rear end of the bottom 2 is hinged the end gate 3, the pivotal axis thereof being at 4, and beneath the rear of the said bottom is fixed the cross bar 5.
box are rotected and strengthened by means of t e channel bars 6, the channel bars being preferably beaded, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 7. The laterally extending bead 7 is formed on the upper and outer edge of the bar, thereby presenting a wider upper surface of the box edge andalso adding strength to same. This bead 7 may be omitted and plain channel bars, as 6 employed, as shown in Figs. 3 and 8. The cleat 1 secured to the board 1, forms a filler for said bead. The channel bars are held in place by means of the rivets 8, but to further insure a perfect fastening small inwardlyprojecting tongues 9 are formed on the lower or free edge of the flanges of the channel bars, these tongues being pressedinto the corres onding grooves 10 in the side boards 1. T ese tongues not only afford a better means of fastening for the channel bars, but also eflectually prevent water entering between said bar and side board and give additional strength to the cross section of the bar.
The manner of fastening the channels to the ends of the side boards of the wagon box is shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 9. j The grooves 10, if desired, may be omitted from the top, as the tongues 9 may readily be pressed into the wood when extending lengthwise of the grain, but said grooves are quite necessary at the ends. The vertical channels on the rear ends of the side boards are cut out at their corners and bent inwardly as shown in Figs. 4 & 9 thus forming at their upper ends flange projections as 6 which engage the top corner of the side boards and afford protection for same.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A wagon box having the edges of the side boards thereof.covered with channel bars, which are clenched securely thereto, said channel bars being provided with a laterally extending bead, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A wagon box having the edges of the side boards thereof covered with channel bars, which are clenched securely thereto, said channel bars being provided with inwardly rojecting tongues on the lower edge of the anges thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A wagon box having the edges of the side boards thereof covered with channel bars, which are clenched securely thereto, said channel bars being provided with laterally extending beads at the upper side and i of the flanges thereof, the said flanges being 10 with inwardly projecting tongues on the turned in at their end to form a continuous lower edge of the flanges thereof, substanflange about the corners of the wagon box,
tially as and for the purpose specified. f h substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. A wagon box having the edges 0 t e side boards thereof covered with channel OLIVER REYNOLDS bars, which are clenched securely thereto, Witnesses:
said channel bars being provided with in- O. V. Fox,
wardly projecting tongues on the lower edge H. M. WARREN.
