Description
P. I. ANDREWS. REINFORGED WAREHOUSE CAR AND BOX APPLICATION FILED MALT], 1912.
1,057,913, Patented Apr. 1,1913.
- To all whom it mag concern:
PAUL I. ANDREWS, OFLKENNEBUNK,
MAINE.
REINFORCED WAREHOUSE CAR AND BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1213.
Application filed Harch 27, 1912. Serial No. 686,681.
Be it known t at I, PAUL I. Anonnws, citizen of the United States, residing at 'Kennebunk, county of York, State of Maine, have invented'a certain new and useful Improvement in Reinforced Warehouse Cars and Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawin 1 Sheets of leatheroid, so-ca ii ed, and fiber board are extensively used in the manufacture of ware house and factory ush cars and boxes which are employed or transferring goods from one place to another about the building. Inorder to withstand the hard uses to which the cars are put it is necessary to reinforce the edges and corners 9 car.
The present invention relates to the means for reinforcing the edges and corners of cars made "of leatheroid or other sheet materm].
,The invention will be fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the and the no-velfeatures will be pointed out and clearly defined in the claim at the close of the specification.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a car embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a per- .spective view showing one of the bottom corners of the car having attached thereto a reinforce embodying the invention. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the bottom and corner reinforce, shown in Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings :the sides,
and ends 1 of the box may-be made of any suitable material, as for instance, leatheroid, the bottom 2 of the box usually being made of wood. The corners of the box where the joint is formed between one end and one side is reinforced on the outside by a corner piece 3 which is shaped to fit over the corner and la ontothe ends and sides and extends near y to the to of the box. These reinforcing corner ang e pieces may be secured by rivets 4 or in any other suitable way.
To protect the bottom of the box at the edges an angle plate of metal is provided having a flat portion 20 which extends beneath the lower edge of the side or end wall =tectt e car. As t accompanying drawings,
l of the car and also laps over onto the lipright portion at ortion 21 e car and through which nails or other suitable fastenmg means 22 are driven into the bottom 2 of the car to secure the angle plate in position. Where the angle plate turns the corner of the bottom it is referably formed with a corrugation 23 and also there'is another corrugatlon 24 above the flat portion 21, the two corrugations 23 and '24 serving stren hen the an is plate and to better proerewill be a gap between the adjacent ends of two of the angle plates at the corner of the box, a corner reinforce is also provided which laps onto the bottom as well as around the corners of the car, as shown in Fig. 2.
vided with concave portions 25, 26, w 'cli' fit onto the convex corrugations 23 and24 of the bottom binders and has flat inset portions27 which fit into the inset portions 21 of the bottom angle plates.
What I claim is;
A metallic bottom binder for 'a box consisting of a metalliean 'leplate bent in such manner as to have a ange which extends from the bottom of the side wall upwardly and a flange which extends beneath the lower edge-of the side wall and laps onto the under side of the bottom of the box, said side .flange being formed 'with a corrugation where it turns the corner and another corrugation at some distance above the first corrugation and a fiat intermediate portion which lies fiat again the wall of the box, in combination with a metallic cor- 'ner reinforce consistin" of an angle plate formed with flanges w ich extend beneath the bottom of the box andflanges which extend up against two adjacent sides of the box and wing portions having top and bottom corrugations and intermediate portions which fit outside of the corrugations 'and intermediate fiat portions of the two adjacent bottom binders.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
PAUL I. ANDREWS. Witnesses:
WILLIAM B. Russa'LL, JOHN N. ,BALCH.
