JACOB DICK, OF GREENVILLE, OHIO.
WAGON-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,703, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed April 11, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, .Lioon DICK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Greenville, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "Wagon Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im- Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on line a at, Fi 2. Fig. 4 is ahorizontal sectional detail view showing a portion of the ends of the sides of the box and the end-gate, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the catchplates.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to wagon-boxes; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the bottom of the box, which is secured upon the cross-pieces B.
O O are the side pieces of the box, which are secured to the inner sides of the standards D, the lower ends of which project through perforations or slots E in the outwardly-projecting ends of the bottom cross-pieces.
The side pieces are provided near their ends with vertical strips F, which are provided with inwardly-projecting flanges G, which form T-shaped ways H, and the ends of the end-gates I are provided with laterally-projecting flanges J, which make the said ends T-shaped in section, and these flanged ends fit and slide in the T-shaped ways.
The sides of the side pieces may be provided with staples or sockets K, into which the lower ends of the standards L of the upper additional side pieces, M, may be inserted, the said side pieces having T-shaped ways N near their ends for the reception of the flanged T-shaped ends of the end-gates O of the top.
(No model.)
The lower reduced ends, P, of the standards D of the box project below the under sides of the slotted ends of the bottom erosspieces, and have horizontal transverse grooves Q upon their inner faces immediately below the under sides of the cross-pieces, which grooves are engaged by the ends of flat catchplates R, pivoted at their inner ends upon the under sides of the cross-plates, and the said plates are retained in their positions engaging the grooves with their outer ends by turn-buttons S, pivoted upon the sides of the cross-pieces. These catch-plates will retain the standards and consequently the side pieces of the wagonbox in position, and when the plates are turned so as to withdraw their ends from the said grooves, after turning the turn-buttons, the standards and the side pieces may be removed from the bottom of the wagon.
It will be seen that by having the ends of the end-gates provided with the laterally-projecting flanges, which will fit into the T-shaped ways in the ends of the side pieces of the box, the joints of the said side pieces and end-gates will be perfectly tight, and also be more secure and strong than the usual manner of simply sliding the ends of the end-gate in grooves in the side pieces.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a wagon-box, the combination ofthe standards having horizontal transverse grooves in their lower ends, the bottom cross-pieces having slots in their ends for the reception of the ends of the standards, the catch-plates pivoted with their inner ends upon the under sides of the crosspieces and engaging the grooves with their outer ends, and the turnbuttons pivoted upon the sides of the crosspieces, preventing the catch-plates from turning, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J AGOB DICK.
