L. HQPRUNBR.
WAGON END GATE.
No. 336,492. Patented Feb. 16, 1886.
HMill/Ul! l; :c Y n UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO n. PRUNER, OE DEAN, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
WAGON END-GATE.
ESPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,492, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed December 4, 1885. Serial No.184,729. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, LORENZO H. PRUNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dean, in the county of Hand and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "Wagon End-Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of one end of a wagon-box provided with my improved endgate. Fig. 2 is a similar view of one of the uprights supporting the end-gate, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken transverse to the wagon-box.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to end-gates for wagon-boxes; and it consistsin the improved construction and combination of parts of a support for the end-gates of a wagon-box, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the bottom of the wagon-box. B B are the sides of the box, and C is a crosspiece secured under the end of the botton1,re enforcing the same. The uprights D, which support the ends of the end gate E, have screwthreaded Shanks F, which pass through the corners of the bottom and through the ends of the cross-piece, and are secured by means of nuts G, bearing against the under side of the cross-piece, and the upper' portions of the uprights are formed with vertical grooves H upon their inner faces, and have laterallyprojecting flanges I I, which are secured to the sides of the box. The upper and lower ends of the sides of the grooves and of the flanges are connected by means of small bracing-lips J or flanges, and the upper ends of the outer iianges ofthe uprights are extended and bent outwardW and downward, forming long lips K, which clamp the upper edges of the ends of the sides of the wagon-box and retain them. The lower ends of these lips have perforations L, which register with perfora tions M in the ends of the box sides, and with. perforations N in the outer iianges of the uprights, and the transverse rod O, which secures` the endgate, passes through these perforations. The end-gate is provided with eyes l?, either formed in re-enforcing strips Q upon the back of the gate, or secured upon the back of the gate, and these eyes register with the perforations in the uprights and the sides receiving the rod, which thus secures the end- 6o gate. The ends of the gate slide in the grooves of the uprights, and when the rod is inserted through the pcrforations and eyes the gate is secured, while, when the rod is removed, the gate may be raised and removed. 6r
It will be seen that the lips upon the uprights will prevent the sides from splitting, as well as secure the sides to the uprights, and the lips will be secured to the sides when the rod is inserted through the perforations. 7o
If desired, the sides may be simply held by the lips of the uprights and by the rod, or they may be bolted to the outer faces of the laterally-proj ecting anges, and when the sides are simply held by the lips of the uprights and by the rod they may be easily removed, Y leaving the bottom with the uprights.
Having thus described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. An end-gate-supporting upright having a screw-threaded shank at its lower end provided with a nut having a vertical groove in its inner face, and having laterally-projecting iianges connected at their ends to the ends of the sides of the groove by means of corner flanges or lips, and provided with an outwardly and downwardly bent long lip having a perforation in its end registering with a perforation in the outerange of the upright, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of the sides and bottom of a wagon-box, uprights secured with their lower threaded ends through the corners of the bottom by means of nuts and having ver- 95 tical grooves upon their inner faces, and outwardly and downwardly bent lips at their upper ends having perforations in their ends registering with perforations in the ends of the side pieces and in the uprights, said roo Y lips clamping the upper edge of the sides, an In testimony thatI Claim the foregoing as my end-gate having eyes upon its beek registerown I have hereunto affixed my signature in ing with the perforations and sliding with its presence of two witnesses.
ends in the grooves of the uprights, and a LORENZO H. PRUNER. 5 transverse rod passing through the perfor@` Witnesses:
tions and eyes, as and for the purpose shown A. G. EBERHART,
and set forth. F. M. PRUNER.
